Crimes Nearby: Prostitution, Fatal Accident and Homeless Assault

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Mineola
A Mineola woman was reportedly killed in upstate Orange County Sunday, according to reports from the New York State Police.

Roslyn Heights
A Baldwin man was arrested at 3:40 a.m. on June 4 for allegedly violating an order of protection. According to detectives, Kareem Brown, 23, violated an order of protection. When the 20-year old female victim contacted police, Brown fled the scene. Police Officers and K-9 Gehrig responded to search the area for Brown who was located in front of 22 Pearsall Place where he was placed under arrest. During K-9 Gehrig’s pursuit of the defendant the animal was injured on a fence requiring immediate surgery to correct his condition. Brown is charged with two counts of aggravated family offense, three counts of first degree criminal contempt, kill/injure a police animal and third degree criminal trespass. He was arraigned on June 4 in First District Court in Hempstead.

Westbury
A homeless man was arrested for assault on June 03 at 11:44 a.m. According to detectives, Third Precinct officers responding to a complaint of men drinking at 460 Maple Ave. observed Miguel Mendoza Cruz, 41, drinking a beer. As the Officer attempted to place Cruz under arrest, he struggled and fought. The officer attempted to radio for assistance but Cruz was able to throw the radio into the street.  Backup officers arrived and were able to restrain and arrest Cruz. The first officer sustained an injury to his right hand and a second Officer sustained a laceration to his hand. Both officers were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Cruz is charged with two counts of second degree assault, fourth degree grand larceny, fourth degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest and second degree obstructing governmental administration. He will be arraigned on June 4 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Jericho
A fatal car accident occurred on June 3 at 9:57 a.m. According to detectives, a 72 year old male was driving his 2013 Mercedes Benz westbound on Jericho Turnpike at Old Hamlet Drive when he struck a 20ll Infinity in the rear operated by Medhat Sami, 73, of Syosset who was stopped for a traffic signal light. That vehicle then struck a 1999 Ford Van in the rear operated by a 70-year old male who was also stopped for the traffic signal light. The operator of the first vehicle suffered from neck pain and hand lacerations and was transported by the Jericho Fire Department to a local nearby hospital for treatment. Medhat Sami was also transported by the Jericho Fire Department to the Nassau Unviversity Medical Center for critical injuries. He was later pronounced at 11 am by a staff physician. The operator of the third vehicle had no injuries. There was no criminality involved with this accident. All vehicles were towed for brake and safety inspections.

Hicksville
A car overturned at Spindle Road and Flamingo Road on June 1 at 5:37 p.m. Injuries were reported but no pin.

A propane tank on fire about 10 ft. from a home was reported at 190 Tenth St. on June 1 at 7:36 p.m.

Bethpage
A fire occurred at 26 Stewart Ave. for a small fire in the rear laundry room at 4:44 p.m. on June 7. The fire was placed under control at 4:56 p.m.

Garden City
A car fire was reported at 60 Charles Lindburgh Blvd. on June 4 at 10:52 a.m.

Garden City and MTA officers responded for a report of a car on the railroad tracks east of New Hyde Park Road on May 26. The driver of the auto, a female 26-year-old from New Hyde Park, was traveling south on New Hyde Park Road before she mistakenly made a left turn onto the railroad tracks. The driver was subsequently arrested for DWI (.08 percent blood alcohol content) and obstructing a railroad crossing.

On May 29 officers responded to Stewart Avenue and Roxbury Road where a motorcyclist traveling east collided with a vehicle stopped for a red traffic light. The motorcyclist, a male 23-year-old from Queens, was transported to Winthrop Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

West Hempstead
Police arrested two women in West Hempstead Wednesday for allegedly performing unlicensed massages on undercover detectives, with one of the women also offering to perform a sexual act for money.
