Crimes Nearby: Prostitution, LIRR Death and Robberies

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park

A car reportedly overturned on Jericho Turnpike and North Second Street with two pins reported on March 17 at 8:06 a.m. The persons were removed and transported to a nearby hospital.

Mineola

Mineola resident George Hahn tragically lost his life on March 19 after he reportedly leapt in front of an oncoming train at the Mineola Train Station.

Members of the Mineola Fire Department responded to a car accident involving an SUV on March 21 on Jericho Turnpike and Mineola Boulevard.

Williston Park

Nassau County Police arrested two Queens women in Williston Park Wednesday on prostitution charges at a Willis Avenue spa.

Westbury

A car accident occurred on Old Country Road and Arlington Street on March 19 at 2:30 p.m. Police responded to the scene requesting the fire department for a door pop.

Jericho

The east and westbound left and HOV lanes of the Long Island Expressway were closed at exit 41 on March 21 at 12:36 p.m. due to two separate auto accidents.

Hicksville

A car crashed into a building at West Village Green and Newbridge Road on March 18 at 8:39 p.m. Injuries were reported. 

A Queens woman was arrested on March 21 at 8:10 p.m. on prostitution charges. According to detectives, Precious Griffin, 29, while inside the Days Inn Motel, 828 South Oyster Bay Road, allegedly offered to perform a sexual act on an undercover detective for an agreed upon amount of money. Griffin was arrested at the scene without incident. She was arraigned on March 22 in First District Court, Hempstead. 

Franklin Square

Mark Griffin, 46, of Springfield Gardens, was arrested in connection with a robbery that occurred on Dec. 27, 2012 at 6:50 p.m. in Franklin Square. According to detectives, two male subjects, wearing masks and gloves, entered the Dollar Store located at 984 Hempstead Turnpike. One of the subjects displayed a handgun while the other took an undisclosed amount of cash and a cell phone. They were last seen eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike, possibly in a red Chevrolet Avalanche. There were three employees in the store at the time of the robbery. No injuries were reported. An investigation by detectives determined that Griffin was the owner/operator of the vehicle involved in the robbery. Griffin is charged with first degree robbery and was arraigned on March 21 in First District Court, Hempstead. The investigation regarding the robbery continues.

Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a robbery that occurred on March 19 at 1:30 p.m. According to detectives, while traveling eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike in his friend’s vehicle, the 20 year old male victim asked him to pull over so he could buy cigarettes. After exiting the vehicle at Catherine Avenue, the victim was approached by two male blacks and one male Hispanic, (no further description) who, after pulling his hoodie over his head, began punching him and stabbing him. The subjects, after removing a Michael Kors watch from the victim’s wrist, fled the scene in an unknown direction. After entering his friend’s car and realizing that he had been stabbed numerous times, the victim was driven to a local hospital where he was admitted for injuries received as a result of the stab wounds. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Garden City

A 22-year-old man from Franklin Square was arrested on March 17 for criminal trespass after forcibly entering a New Hyde Park Road residence in an intoxicated state and refusing to leave when informed to do so by the owner of the residence.

A 24-year-old man from Hempstead was arrested on March 17 for possession of marijuana during a traffic violation investigation on Clinton Road at Wyatt Road.

An 18-year-old female from Garden City was arrested on March 17 for obstruction of government administration after interfering with a police investigation on Franklin Court.

West Hempstead

On March 13 at 9:55 p.m., Craig Bonne, 51, of Mineola, was arrested for DWI on Hempstead Turnpike near Buckingham Road in West Hempstead.

Prostitution arrests continue in West Hempstead as two women were arrested after allegedly offering sex acts to undercover police officers at a West Hempstead motel Thursday night.

Two employees at Shunyuan Spa Inc. were also arrested and charged with prostitution, bringing the 2013 total up to 13 for both Shunyuan, located at 357 Hempstead Turnpike, Suite 203, and Lucy Day Spa, which is just down the road from Shunyuan at 300 Hempstead Turnpike.
