Crimes Nearby: Prostitution, Menacing and Robberies

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Garden City Park
An overturned SUV closed Nassau Boulevard near the Merillon Avenue train station on May 9.

Westbury
Two women were arrested for prostitution on May 7 at 9:15 p.m. in Westbury. According to detectives Lauren Regan, 26, of Valley Stream and Annie Cruz, 25, of Long Beach, while inside a local motel, offered to engage in a sexual act with an undercover detective for an agreed upon amount of money. Both women were placed under arrest without incident. Regan and Cruz are both charged with prostitution, were released on appearance tickets and are due in First District Court, Hempstead on May 21.

A Brooklyn woman was arrested for prostitution that occurred on May 7 at 10:15 p.m. in Westbury. According to detectives, Korah John, 22, while inside a local motel, offered to engage in a sexual act with an undercover detective for an agreed upon amount of money. The defendant was placed under arrest without incident. John is charged with prostitution and was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on May 8.

Jericho
A Flushing woman was arrested for prostitution on May 5, 2013 at 8:50 p.m. in Jericho. According to detectives, Shun Yu Jin, 48, while in an area motel offered to engage in a sexual act with another for an agreed upon amount of US currency. Jin was taken into custody without incident. She is being charged with prostitution and was arraigned on May 6 at First District Court in Hempstead.

A Westbury man was charged with a grand larceny that occurred in Jericho on May 8 at 7:43 p.m. According to detectives, Patrick Minervini, 22, entered Club Fit 24/7 located at 99 Jericho Turnpike, went to the locker room and took a male victim’s wallet out of an unlocked locker. The victim also discovered that his credit card was fraudulently used a short time later at the Mobil gas station located at 285 North Broadway in Hicksville. After obtaining pictures from the gym camera and reviewing the gas station camera, a Second Precinct Police Officer located and arrested the defendant at his residence on May 9. Minervini is being charged with fourth degree grand larceny, fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, third degree identity theft and was arraigned on May 10 in First District Court Hempstead.

Woodbury
A Manhattan man was arrested in Woodbury on May 7 at 8 a.m. on burglary charges. According to detectives, Vincent Yi, 24, went to a residence on Underhill Avenue in Syosset on May 1, gaining entry to the home through an unlocked kitchen door and forcing open a locked bedroom door. Yi then removed a Tag Heuer watch, U.S. currency and fled the scene on foot where he was observed by a witness. After an investigation the defendant was identified and surrendered to detectives. The proceeds were recovered. Yi was charged with second degree burglary and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on May 8.

Hicksville
A Hicksville man was arrested for menacing on May 7 at 4:03 a.m. in Hicksville. According to detectives, the victim, a 30 year old male, after closing “The Shoppe,” a bar located at 4 West Village Green, observed a female who was passed out on a bench outside the establishment. After checking on her wellbeing and being told that her boyfriend had choked her out, a vehicle driven by Hector Valdes, 24, pulled up to their location. After exiting his vehicle and exchanging words with the victim regarding his girlfriend, Valdes entered another car that had pulled up to their location. After entering that vehicle, Valdes pointed a black handgun out of the window at the victim and warned him not to interfere. The vehicle then left the scene. Later that day, at 4:43 p.m., Valdes was located by investigating detectives at his home and placed him under arrest without incident. Valdes is charged with second degree menacing and was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on May 8.

Police arrested a Hicksville man for an attempted robbery on May 9 at 3:25 p.m. According to detectives, Christian Menendez, 20, armed with a knife, approached a male victim, 18, who was riding his bicycle on Cedar Street/Woodbury Road, and demanded he empty his pockets. The victim was able to flee on his bicycle to his residence where he notified police. The defendant was known to the victim. No injuries were reported. Police arrested Menendez on May 9 on Cedar Street/Stanley Street in Hicksville.  He is being charged with first degree attempted robbery and was arraigned on May 10 in First District Court in Hempstead.

A pedestrian was reportedly struck at a gas station at 12:59 p.m. on May 10 at 285 South Broadway at when a truck was backing up.

A Hicksville teen was arrested for a burglary that occurred on March 11. According to detectives when officers responded to a residence on Princess Street, during the investigation, the department’s crime scene search unit secured a sample of blood from the basement floor. On April 29 a positive DNA match was made linking a 16-year old male to the burglary. On May 6, second precinct plain clothes officers located the underage youth at his residence and placed him under arrest without incident. During his arrest the defendant was found to be possession of Marihuana. The youth is charged with second-degree burglary and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead.

Garden City
A 50-year-old female from Valley Stream was arrested on May 1 for attempting to cash a $23,500 fraudulent check in the name of a Maryland business. She was charged with attempted grand larceny and possession of a forged instrument.

A 46-year-old female from Floral Park was arrested on May 3 for the theft of $260 in assorted merchandise from Sears.

A resident reported an identity theft on May 5 where unauthorized transactions in an amount exceeding $8,000 were made against a bank account.

West Hempstead
A car, headed southbound on Woodfield Road in West Hempstead, left the roadway early Wednesday morning and landed up on the front lawn of a nearby home.
