Crimes Nearby: Public Lewdness, Robberies and Disbarred Attorney

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Williston Park

A car accident occurred in Williston Park on Saturday, Sept 7 at 12:46 p.m. According to detectives, a 49-year old female pedestrian was crossing Hillside Avenue northbound at Willis Avenue when she was struck by a 2008 Dodge being operated by a 53 year old male. The vehicle was traveling southbound on Willis Avenue and made a left turn to eastbound Hillside Avenue when the collision occurred. The victim was removed to an area hospital where she was admitted with a head injury and is listed in stable condition. Safety checks were conducted on the vehicle at the scene. Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time.

Carle Place

A Hempstead man was arrested in Carle Place on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013 at 7:40 a.m. According to detectives, on Friday, Sept. 6, Robert Ardoin, 35, of was present at Party City at 290 Voice Road seeking employment. Ardoin entered an office and removed a backpack containing an iPad, laptop computer and hearing aid equipment. After placing the backpack inside a bag he was carrying he left the store. An officer on routine patrol observed Ardoin on Voice Road and after an investigation placed him into custody without incident. Ardoin was charged with third degree burglary and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Monday, Sept. 09, 2013.

Westbury

A homeless man was arrested for a robbery that occurred on Sept 10, 2013 at 1:15 p.m. in Westbury. According to detectives, Alec Smith, 22, entered Zainos Nursery at 1038 Brush Hollow Road, approached the 52 year old female cashier, produced a handgun and demanded money. The victim screamed and Smith, who fled the scene on foot without any proceeds, was chased by other nursery employees. Smith was located a short time later by police on Amber Ct. at Cedar Road and was placed under arrest without incident. A subsequent investigation revealed that Smith was responsible for two other robberies, one on Sept. 2 at Metro PCS, 55 Broadway, Hicksville and the other at the Citgo gas station, in Hicksville on Sept. 7. Smith is charged with two counts of first degree robbery, two counts of second degree robbery, first degree attempted robbery, second degree attempted robbery and two unrelated warrant charges for forgery. He was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on Sept. 11.

A Bethpage man was for public lewdness that occurred in Westbury on Friday, Aug. 23 at 2:15 p.m. According to detectives, three female victims, ages 29, 28 and 14, were sitting out by a pool located at 1299 Corporate Drive, when they observed Mario Kot, 56, approximately 10 feet away, exposing him self through the mesh on a chair.  The victims notified a lifeguard at which time the defendant fled in his 2012 Toyota Camry. Subsequent investigation led to the Kot’s arrest on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Kot is being charged with public lewdness, endangering the welfare of a child and was arraigned on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in First District Court, Hempstead.

Old Westbury

All eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway were closed on Sept. 8 at 3:59 p.m. at Exit 39 at Glen Cove Road due to an overturned car. It was reopened at 4:23 p.m. 

A disbarred attorney from Old Westbury has pled guilty on Sept. 12 to charges with stealing more than $4 million from multiple individuals and banks he was representing in real estate deals, including his own wife. James Kalpakis, 52, is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 3. Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice said that Kalpakis, an attorney who was suspended from the practice of law in 2005 and disbarred upon his resignation in Sept. 2009, stole approximately $4.315 million from five clients he represented in real estate deals between September 2008 and January 2011. According to Rice, in Sept. 2008, Kalpakis illegally obtained a 30-year, $1.1 million mortgage loan from a bank to refinance a mortgage on a home owned by his wife by submitting a forged power of attorney in her name, giving him authority to sign the mortgage in her absence. He received a check made payable to him in the amount of $402,152 at closing. The balance of the loan was used to pay off the existing mortgage, but Kalpakis stopped making payments on the loan in December 2009. His wife knew nothing about the loan.

Hicksville

Crime Stoppers and the Nassau County Police Department are seeking the public’s help with identifying a subject wanted in connection with a robbery which occurred in Hicksville, New York. On Sunday, July 21, 2013, at approximately 12:43 a.m. a victim was in the parking lot of the 7-11 Store located at 158 Woodbury Road, Hicksville talking with the subject. A verbal altercation ensued, and the pictured subject cut the victim in the face with a razor blade causing him multiple lacerations, and substantial pain. The suspect then proceeded to steal the victim’s wallet containing assorted personal papers, his NYS driver’s license, and a undisclosed amount of US Currency. The victim sustained 110 stitches as a result of his injuries. The subject fled the scene in an unknown direction. A car overturned in front of the Broadway Mall on Sept. 9 at 11:56 a.m. All occupants were able to free themselves from the vehicle.

Franklin Square 

Two Brooklyn and one Queens man were arrested for a robbery which occurred on Friday, Sept. 13 at 11:16 a.m. in Franklin Square. According to detectives, four men arrived at Tri Star Motors at 790 Hempstead Turnpike. Two of the men entered the business armed with a handgun while two waited outside in the car. While inside, the property of three male employees was taken by the suspects before they exited and fled in the car in an unknown direction. Responding officers observed a car matching the description of the one occupied by the suspects and conducted a stop near Evans Avenue in Elmont. The four suspects exited the car and were apprehended after a short foot pursuit. No injuries were reported. The suspects are identified as David L. Hosannah, 32, Horatio M. Thomas, 28, of Jamaica, Rubens Petion, 36, of Brooklyn and Khalid Wisdom, 21, of Brooklyn.  They are each charged with three counts of first degree robbery and third degree criminal possession of a weapon and were arraigned on Sept. 14 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Floral Park

Nassau County Police confirmed a sexual assault that occurred at Jack Duggan's bar on Tulip Avenue on Aug. 20. Police would not release details of the incident. According to police, Sean McManus was arraigned on the charge of first degree rape on Aug. 30.

Garden City

On Sept. 4 an Old Country Road business reports three forged company checks totaling $3,000 were cashed at a New York City bank.

On Sept. 4 numerous pieces of jewelry and watches by a subject who had fled Sears. After a brief foot pursuit, Officer Walsh, with the aid of a court officer, apprehended the subject, a male 47-year-old from Hempstead, in the vicinity of the Nassau County Court complex. Upon further investigation, the subject was charged with a similar theft at Sears where he stole assorted clothing valued at more than $1,000, and an outstanding Nassau County warrant for larceny.

On Sept. 7 a 60-year-old man from West Hempstead was arrested for leaving the scene of a property damage accident on Hilton Avenue and Fourth Street. The subject fled the scene after the accident but was followed by a Nassau County detective who witnessed the event until he could be stopped by a Garden City officer.

A fire occurred at 209 Kildare Road on Sept. 7 at 9:41 p.m. Westbury, Franklin Square, Mineola and Garden City units responded to the scene.

West Hempstead

Between 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 29, an unknown suspect stole a wallet from a car on Madison Avenue in West Hempstead.

At 3:40 p.m. on Sept. 1, a suspect kicked a vehicle after getting into an argument with the car's owner over a parking spot. The incident took place on Oakford Avenue in West Hempstead.

Between 11 p.m. Sept. 1 and 7 a.m. Sept. 2, a suspect stole change and other items from a car on Garden Place in West Hempstead.

Between 11 p.m. Sept. 1 and 9:30 a.m. Sept. 2, sports equipment was taken from a car on Hempstead Gardens Drive in West Hempstead.

Nassau County Police on Friday night said a man jogging on Sunrise Highway was hit by a car.
