Crimes Nearby: Shots Fired, Gun Possession and Senior Burn Victim

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Lake Success

A truck overturned on the eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway between exits 34 and 35 on August 10 at 2:35 am. Nassau County Police responded to the scene, observing that the truck had rolled over onto its side. The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department responded as well. The driver exited the truck under his own power.

Roslyn

The Long Island Expressway was closed on the eastbound side between exit 36 and 37 on August 5 at 5:51 a.m. due to a two-vehicle auto accident with two lanes blocked.

A missing 7-year old child was reported at 220 Powerhouse Road in Roslyn Heights on August 6 at 9:25 p.m.

A spill occurred at 440 Bryant Ave. on August 7 at 5:53 p.m. Nassau County hazmat team was requested to the scene.

Westbury

A section along Post Avenue experienced flooding on August 10 at 1:39 p.m. with about two to 3 feet of water. The operator of a vehicle was stuck in a car while in the flood water and was rescued at 1:41 p.m.

An assault on a female was reported at 575 Merrick Ave. at Mid-Island Indoor Tennis on August 7 at 10:05 p.m.

A Staten Island man was arrested in Old Westbury on August 10 at 10:30 p.m. for allegedly impersonating an officer. According to police, a highway patrol bureau police officer observed Conrad Cassanova, age 43 of 121 Circle Loop Drive operating a 2002 BMW westbound on the Long Island Expressway in the vicinity of Exit 39. The defendant failed to maintain a single lane of traffic by crossing over pavement markings. A stop was conducted and the defendant identified himself as an Amtrak police officer. The officer became suspicious when Cassanova produced a badge and identification card that did not identify him as being a police officer. When questioned the defendant repeatedly stated he was an Amtrak police officer. An investigation was conducted and it was determined that the defendant was a civilian employee of Amtrak. Cassanova was placed into custody. He was charged with second degree criminal impersonation and failure to use a designated lane of traffic and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on August 11.

Hicksville

A car fire occurred on North Newbridge Road and Stewart Avenue on August 5 at 1:01 p.m. The fire department was requested to the scene.

A house at 10 Lawrence St. was struck by lightning on August 5 at 9:16 p.m. Units from Levittown and Plainview were requested. The fire was put under control at 9:29 p.m.

A truck collided with a pole at 520 South Broadway on August 7 at 7 p.m. The driver was reportedly in cardiac arrest and CPR was being performed. LIPA was requested for the pole which fell on top of 4 cars.

A fire was reported at 355 North Newbridge Road at the Town of Oyster Bay Senior Housing facility on Aug. 8 at 6:21 p.m. The fire was in the second floor apartment of a garden-style complex. Initial reports were of people trapped. The fire was in the kitchen of the apartment. The Hicksville Fire Department responded to the scene with approximately ten firefighting apparatus and one hundred fire personnel to extinguish the fire. A 61-year old male was removed and transported to Nassau University Medical Center with smoke inhalation and first and second degree burns to his arms and face. The fire was contained at 6:27 p.m. The Town of Oyster Bay Housing Authority and the American Red Cross were present at the scene and assisted at least several residents with temporary housing placement. The Arson Bomb Squad and the Nassau County Fire Marshal were present at the scene and are investigating.

Franklin Square

A car overturned on Franklin Avenue on August 5 at 2:18 p.m. The fire department and EMS units were requested to the scene.

On August 4 a vehicle was stopped by police on Meadow Street after observing it traveling westbound crossing over the center lane markings before turning unsafely without signaling onto Meadow Place. The driver, a male 28-year-old from Hempstead, was placed under arrest for DWI (.12 percent blood alcohol content). During the investigation at the scene the subject was determined to be in possession of a .22 caliber Derringer. The arrested subject was charged with possession of a weapon, felony DWI due to a prior DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation first degree (license was suspended for a prior DWI), two lane violations and unsafe turn. During the arrest processing of the subject, it was determined that he was also the subject of an outstanding New York State felony parole warrant.

A motorcycle and a car  evening. It appeared that the motorcycle was headed northbound and the car southbound when they made contact just outside the Community Park complex. The driver of the car was shaken and the male driver of the motorcycle was injured but it did not appear to be life threatening.

According to detectives, police officers responded to 119 Woodfield Road, Leisure Lounge, around 4:05 a.m. for the report of shots fired. Shortly after, police were notified that two male victims, ages 33 and 23, were at different hospitals with gun shot wounds to their legs. The injuries are considered non-life threatening. The investigation is ongoing.
