Crimes Nearby: Struck Pedestrian, Sweepstakes Scam and Shortchanged Workers

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions. 

Garden City Park

A pedestrian was struck on Jericho Turnpike and Fifth Avenue on May 16 at 7:40 p.m. Third Precinct units arrived on scene to treat the 49-year old female who was reported to be alert and conscious after being struck by a car travelling 25 miles per hour. The victim was transported to complaining of pin to the knee.

Mineola

A car crashed into  on May 15 at about 2 a.m. The driver, reportedly a 58-year old man, allegedly .

Old Westbury

A Queens insulation company pled guilty to cheating workers out of more than $30,000 for work performed at the Wheatley High School in Old Westbury.

Maspeth-based New York Insulation LLC will pay restitution in the amount of $33,408 in back wages and $11,500 in fines to Nassau County. In the summer of 2009, New York Insulation was contracted to perform insulation work on the rooftop HVAC system of Wheatley High School.

As a public works project, New York Insulation is required by law to pay its workers the state prevailing wage.

The  Labor Unit’s investigation revealed that of the six employees who manned the job, only two were listed on the certified payroll records filed with the East Williston Union Free School District. In addition, the two employees listed were not paid the required overtime rate. The remaining four workers were grossly underpaid for both the straight and overtime compensation.

Hicksville

A hazmat incident occurred on 21 Apollo Lane on May 14 at 3:46 p.m. 

The Garden City Police Department is investigating a report on May 15 of an apparent scam where a person claiming to be from a sweepstakes network called a resident stating that she had just won a sweepstakes prize of $350,000 and to cover delivery insurance costs, she would have to send a check of more than $1,000 to claim the prize. The department urges all residents to be very wary of these types of scams.

Malverne-West Hempstead

Tires and rims were stolen off of three vehicles that had been parked in West Hempstead and Elmont between May 9 and May 10. The incidents occurred on Sylvan Drive in West Hempstead, and Gotham Avenue and Baylis Avenue in Elmont.

Property was also stolen from a vehicle parked on Admont Avenue in Franklin Square between May 13 and May 14 after the rear driver's side window of the victim's car was smashed by an unknown suspect.

An unknown person broke into several vehicles parked on Cathedral Avenue in Franklin Square on May 14 and took various items including GPS units, laptops and cameras from inside.

Between May 8 and May 9, an unknown person broke the right rear window of a car parked on Whitehall Boulevard in Garden City South.
