DA: Man Sentenced for Albertson Home Explosion

An Albertson man was sentenced for causing an explosion in his Albertson home during a standoff with police in July 2012, officials said.

Jeffrey Anlyan, 47, pleaded guilty in January to third-degree arson and first-degree criminal contempt.

Nassau County Court Judge Alan Honorof sentenced Anlyan Wednesday to three to six years in prison.  

On July 9, 2012, police went to Anlyan’s home, responding to a report of an earlier violation of a Do Not Harass Order of Protection issued against Anlyan, according to the Nassau DA. Once police set up a perimeter, Anlyan waved “several weapons, including knives and a baseball bat,” the DA’s office said.

Within an hour, Anlyan filled up the home with natural gas. After he threatened to ignite the gas, the home exploded, and as a result, Anlyan suffered serious burns. The home endured tens of thousands of dollars of damage.

There were no additional injuries in the explosion, authorities said.  

A crisis negotiation team and additional specialized Nassau County Police Department units were also on the scene.

A further stand-off with police inside the home took place, with Anlyan locking himself in an upstairs bedroom and periodically displaying what police at the scene said was a firearm. After several hours, Anlyan was arrested by police.

Anlyan’s attorney, Dennis Lemke, was not immediately available for comment.
