Incumbent easily defeated candidates Anthony Vaglica and James Devane for the position of Fire Commissioner for the , which holds a five-year term.
Stein captured 878 votes to Vaglica’s 306 and Devane’s 47.
“I’m just very appreciative to the people of New Hyde Park and all the people who worked so hard to help me get re-elected,” Stein said. “The people of the fire department, the Indian community, Rich Nicolello did a lot and just all the people who supported me.”
Stein has been a member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department for the past 39 years and in running for re-election, he helped to keep costs down in the fire district and to get grant money.
“I’m so happy, I’m ecstatic!” New Hyde Park resident Ellen LaRegina said. “My community and tax money are safe for five more years!”
Stein served for 20 years as a deputy safety inspector for the New York City Fire Department, has held the posts of lieutenant, captain and safety officer as a member of Active Hook & Ladder Co. 1, and also responds regularly to emergency medical calls the department receives.
“He’s a good commissioner, he’s a good man and he’s the right man for the right job,” volunteer firefighter Karl Bumeisters said. “This is a happy day for New Hyde Park.”
