Former New Hyde Park Fire Commissioner Faces Newcomer in Race

Vincent LaPorta challenging former commissioner Jim Nagy in election.

The race for New Hyde Park Fire Commissioner in 2013 will be between a former commissioner and a challenger who has no previous experience in the fire department.

Former fire commissioner James Nagy is running after current incumbent John DiVello decided he would not be seeking another term. Facing him will be Vincent LaPorta, a 30-year resident of New Hyde Park, who is not a member of the department, but who has been a staple at board meetings over the past several months.

The 75-year old Nagy previously served as a chief in the department and is currently a second lieutenant in the department’s police unit. He is also an ambulance driver for company No. 2. He also served on the board of fire commissioners from 1987-2000 in addition to being appointed to finish a term of a previous board member.
