Garden City Park Fire Department Loses Grant for Portable Radios

The $100,000 grant was the result of work done with then Senator Craig Johnson.

The Garden City Park Fire Department's $100,000 grant that they thought they were getting as a result of filing paperwork and working with then State Senator Craig Johnson will not be received after all.

This grant was going to be used to replace the department's old portable radio system, which Chief William Rudnicke noted is between 12 and 15-years-old and has "reached its life expectancy."

The Garden City Park Fire Department anticipates having to come up with that money out of their budget. The department is working with Seventh District State Senator Jack Martins on trying to get grant money. Rudnicke said the department will try to make cuts to create the money for these radios either this year or next year.

Second Assistant Chief Robert Mirabile expressed his frustration at losing this grant money because the department starting working on the grant in 2009 and "we would have had two fiscal years that we could have budgeted for it," he said.
