Garden City Park Firefighters to Dedicate New Memorial

Ceremony to honor firefighters who lost their lives in line of duty.

The will hold a dedication ceremony this Sunday, May 27 to unveil its newly erected firefighters memorial.

The new memorial commemorates and remembers two community members who gave their lives in the line-of-duty as Garden City Park Firefighters.

Captain Richard Provost died of injuries sustained while fighting a van-fire where illegally transported propane cylinders exploded and struck Provost, age 37, in 1977.

Last year Firefighter Thomas Regan fell while responding to a Carbon-Monoxide Emergency during an ice storm. He died as a result of his injuries several weeks later. Firefighter Regan was posthumously promoted to chief of department.

The memorial also displays the names of nearly 50 members of the department who died while still an active firefighter.  Included in those names is David Regan who was killed at age 27 in the line-of-duty while working as a New York City Police Officer.

Monday will mark the 12th Anniversary of Officer Regan’s death; he was also an active volunteer firefighter.

The dedication ceremony and unveiling with begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Garden City Park Fire Headquarters.

It will be attended by past and present members of the department, The Garden City Park Junior Firefighters, The Garden City Park Ladies Auxiliary, the Provost and Regan families, neighboring Fire Departments such as , Floral Park, , Bellerose Terrace and , along with local dignitaries.

The Garden City Park Fire Department Chiefs would also like to extend an invitation to any community members who would like to take part in remembering our past heroes.

A luncheon will follow the ceremony at fire headquarters.
