Garden City Park Man Blows off Hand Searching for Candle

46-year old resident reportedly mistook firework for candle.

A Garden City Park man lost his hand on Monday after his power went out due to Hurricane Sandy after he reportedly mistook a firework for a candle in the darkness.

Detectives from the Nassau County Arson/Bomb Squad reported that the incident occurred on Monday night at 6:04 p.m. when the still-unidentified 46-year-old male, while in his residence during a power outage on Birchwood Drive, lit a firework, believing it to be a candle and blew off his hand to the wrist.

No other injuries were reported.

Nassau County Police Ambulance transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.
