Glen Cove Police Find Body by Arterial Highway

Glen Cove Police have identified a body found Wednesday afternoon by Glen Cove Arterial Highway near the Long Island Rail Road overpass.

On Wednesday at approximately 4:25 p.m., police were directed to the area for a possible deceased person. When police arrived, they found a body in the stream at that location.

The person was pronounced deceased at the scene by Glen Cove EMS personnel.

The man was identified as 66-year-old Victor Manuel Alas, of Glen Cove, and police said he appears to have drowned at that location. He was found by his son who went looking for him when had not seen him "in a few days," according to a news release.

The son told police that his father was homeless by choice and refused the family's requests for him to live with them.

The Nassau County Homicide Squad is assisting the Glen Cove Police in the investigation.

"At this time we are handling the case as an accidental death," Glen Cove Police Lt. John Nagle said in a statement.

"A full autopsy will be performed by the Nassau County Medical Examiner's Office,” he added.

I was driving home and saw all the, empty, police vehicles parked along the road by the creek. I figured they were hunting along the creek on foot. Guess that was correct. Poor man.
