Great Neck Man Arrested in New Hyde Park for Car Theft and DWI

Omar Nunez allegedly stole a car from a 7-Eleven on Hillside Avenue Tuesday night.

A Great Neck man was arrested for grand larceny and DWI after allegedly stealing a car late Tuesday in New Hyde Park, Nassau Police said.

According to detectives, Omar Nunez, 32, got into a 2002 Honda owned by a 20-year old male victim that was parked and left running in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at 1599 Hillside Ave. at about 9:20 p.m.

Nunez allegedly took the vehicle and fled from the scene. When the victim returned to the parking lot and saw that his car had been stolen, he called 911.

A Highway Patrol Bureau Officer who was traveling on New Hyde Park Road spotted the car traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction. After making a U-turn, the officer relocates the vehicle and observed that it was involved in a three-car collision on New Hyde Park Road.

By that time Nunez had abandoned the vehicle, fleeing on foot. The officer spotted Nunez, pursuing him on foot and eventually placed him under arrest.

Nunez is charged with third degree grand larceny, driving while intoxicated, two counts of first degree aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, unlicensed operator and imprudent speed.

He will be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court, Hempstead.
