New Hyde Park Fire Commissioner Michael Dolan, Sr. was arrested in Garden City on Friday on assault charges stemming from a road rage incident according to Garden City Police.

According to detectives, officers responded to a road rage incident on Merillon Avenue on Nov. 22 between the 69-year old Dolan and another male driver. Both vehicles had stopped and Dolan allegedly walked up to the other car and punched the driver in the face causing pain, facial lacerations and a broken tooth.

The victim is a 64-year-old man from Massapequa.

Upon their investigation, Garden City detectives identified Dolan and arrested him for assault.

Dolan's identity and mugshot were obtained by Patch through requests made to the Garden City Police Department.

Dolan, who is a sitting New Hyde Park Fire Commissioner, was earlier this year dismissed from his duties as a member of the fire department after allegedly stealing smoke detectors from the department in 2012. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office eventually dropped the criminal charges. The fire commissioners issued a decision to dismiss Michael Dolan Sr. from his duties as a firefighter, but voted to reinstate his son, Michael Dolan Jr. to the department.

I'm not holier then anyone else. People should not be judging other people especially when they are down. This guy and his his family have been criticized enough. They are paying a price already. I just think they should be left alone now. That is all, Merry Christmas.
Hello December 19, 2013 at 12:23 AM
I agree, Mick, just go after the family, right?...When Dolan JR. came home from Iraq, the NHPFD sent a fire truck ( sure, to look good for the local papers! ) but they never sent the firemen. Not ONE Commissioner, not ONE Chief, and only ONE percent showed up from NHPFD to welcome JR. home. Oh, and lets just charge the kid with a "felony", too. Sure, go after the kid. WHY? MY opinion? Because they did not want Dolan SR. to be a Commissioner, OR maybe they "just missed the memo" that day, when he was coming home from war. Both father and son have been members for years. One thing has nothing to do with the other. You just put on your uniform and go, despite who you "vote for". A VERY nice, VERY public message the NHPFD sent out that day. Look up the archives. The community was there, other fire departments were there, but not the NHPFD. Nice "brotherhood". Amazing.
Hello December 19, 2013 at 12:42 AM
Now to the story. Yes, I also would have done the same thing Dolan did in this incident! Many would! The story does not give details, hope you get them soon. Many have been waiting a few WEEKS on those details, and many have also been waiting a YEAR on the smoke detector details from the public hearing! Did Commissioner Stein return those smoke detectors that he said "on the stand" that he was in possession of? Funny he charges 2 men with theft ( a FELONY no less ) but he is in possession of them . MY opinion ? Yes, that makes HIM a thief. I would love a follow up story, or information on the unanswered questions on this "smoke detector trial" that was held that the public attended!

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas to you too. A story is published that shows a man's mugshot and reports of a horrific act of anger and how do you expect people to react? It is no differerent from any other article out there that features a mugshot and details of some heinous act that lead to the arrest. Or is it? It appears in this case that there are those in the know -- who have inside info as to what actually took place that day when a punch was thrown in anger (according to the report) and yet won't share those details and then get their panties in a knot when someone elects to evoke their right of freedom of speech and comment on a story that gives details of a crime, a story that apparently has more to it than is being reported and you who have this knowledge don't share it? That is a preposterous unjustice to the accused person in the article! If you are going to join in on the discussion to defend a person's particular act yet plead the 5th and offer no details, what good is it? This forum presents you with the opportunity to set the record straight about the article that was reported. Otherwise, we will read the article, see a mugshot and have an opinion based on what we read. $@#t or get off the pot already. Tell us what you know and not what we already know, like things that were done in the past. Let's keep the discussion in this particular criminal act-- the road rage incident (as reported in this story). Happy & healthy New Year to all and Merry Chrustmas.

"Otherwise, we will read the article, see a mugshot and have an opinion based on what we read." Exactly! Newspapers, and the Patch, are full of similar articles accompanied by mugshots every single day and countless people make disparaging comments about them despite only having the information that has been presented in the articles. The difference here is that some people have alluded to the fact that they know the full scoop but for some reason won't post it. Don't blame people for speculating. Put up or shut up.
mick December 19, 2013 at 08:46 PM
I'm sorry to hear that "Hello". They sent only one truck! Very sad..
Hello December 19, 2013 at 09:44 PM
Mick, SO sad indeed...(1 truck and 1% of the department. I still cannot get over that. Terrible! Ok, well, since I did "hear" what happened , I do not feel I should post a story just based on what I hear through the grapevine . I was not present, so I am also not a witness. There could be more to it? Would you even believe me? Why didn't the others reveal what they know? Listen, I agree, the story is so one sided, and does not give details.at all .I really wish I knew why the story did not get the info, as there are 2 sides to a story. Inquiring minds want to know ! No one is blaming anyone for speculating. I feel perhaps if the Patch now ( weeks later ) would reach out to Dolan (or his lawyer?) and get a statement, or do a follow up story on the details that everyone would like to know about, all would see what the Patch, Dolan, or his lawyer has to say...hope they do! That's all. Happy Holidays!
Tommy Crenshaw December 20, 2013 at 01:06 AM
To Hello--the article states he allegedly assaulted the other driver. Can't you tell us what you heard and just start it off with "What I heard is that allegedly...." ? Otherwise , I would have to disagree with your comment that says "no one is blaming for speculating" when clearly those who have commented have been chastised for voicing their views based on an image of an alleged damaging punch to the face(according to what was reported) so please tell us the alleged other side of the story. Happy Holidays!! to you too again.
Tommy Crenshaw December 20, 2013 at 07:41 PM
Ok, Hello- one alleged crime down, one to go. Please tell us what you heard about the alleged punching in the face incident. Were the charges dropped? Was the other guy also arrested for some action brought against the accused? The only thing we know right now us what we've read and the hoodie mugshot.
ann m December 20, 2013 at 10:43 PM
Probably, Oh it's just a LONG ISLAND thing.. "Don't confuse them with the facts" so much better to be dumb.. Can't wait to move, I'll take Queens or Brooklyn any day...
Hello December 21, 2013 at 01:17 AM
Too bad that there are NO facts! Tell the Patch to get BOTH sides of the story,l so all may know...(and not to delete breaking, big news...:) Let's keep them guessing until next story, it sells! Yes...and too much petty drama in NHP...what a shame, I agree! Merry Christmas!
mick December 21, 2013 at 08:44 AM
You are right Hello, the Patch should try and get a statement from Dolan's attorney and try to get both sides of the story. I'm glad to hear he was reinstated as a fireman. The story is in the Herald Courier..and way too petty drama also!! It's a crying shame! Merry Christmas!
Tommy Crenshaw December 21, 2013 at 09:19 AM
Merry Christmas!! Thanks for the cop-out comments Mick and Hello. You and others who , on an anonymous posting site, claim to have heard the other side of the story refuse to enlightened everyone (again,on an anonymous posting site) with the other side of the story. The Patch is just reporting what they were told from the police when the punch to the face was thrown. You have actually heard the other side of the story and won't share it (anonymously) And you have the balls to make a comment about the Patch's lack of reporting?? Why, that's preposterous. Please stop adding meaningless comments. Oh, and Merry Christmas!!
Tommy Crenshaw December 21, 2013 at 10:21 AM
To Hello - why do you keep posting about his reinstatement , which everyone already knows about and is not related to the punch in the face? You have heard the other side what lead to the punch in the face and you keep posting about something unrelated. What gives? Happy Holidays!!!!
Hello December 21, 2013 at 10:51 AM
To Tommy...If you scroll up to the story on this forum, the ending of the story also includes the "smoke detector arrest" so since there is breaking news about this that I and a ton of people wanted to hear about, after waiting for it for a year. The Patch deleted it for the 3 rd time, don't know why? You have been patient ,I will give you that...but I did say that I hear the story through the grapevine.( It IS an amazing one. )therefore I am debating if I should post. Would you? ( and truly no one is annynoumous) It should be Dolan or his lawyer, in my opinion. I will reach out to the Patch and see if they can make it happen.Think about it, though, if 3 people said " they would do the same thing" in this situation, sounds to me that there is more to it...got to be. Who knows? Maybe that the other guy raised his hand first/ threatened him, etc, and Dolan protected himself/swung back, and "landed"? C'mon. Every story has a beginning, middle and ending. The Patch, Dolan, or his lawyer can get facts!
Tommy Crenshaw December 21, 2013 at 11:15 AM
How "amazing" can it be? It was either self-defense and the other guy would have been arrested as well, or it wasn't. So, did the amazing story you heard say that it was self defense or not? Just tell us already.
mick December 21, 2013 at 01:45 PM
You are right Hello, you can't post something you heard through the grapevine. It's the Patch's job to get the facts from his attorney. Hope they can get the story straight.
Phil McCracken December 21, 2013 at 04:18 PM
Well I will tell the story that was told to me. I am rejoining this topic late I thought it was a finished conversation, so forgive me for not reading al the posts it looks like everyone has gone off on other issues. For starters I have said sorry to Mr. Dolan for my disparaging remarks made here on the Patch. I was informed that allegedly the other driver had made a very disgusting verbal proposition to Mr. Dolan's wife during a traffic altercation prompting Mr. Dolan to strike the man, defending his wife's honor. This I agree with but this could have been avoided. Why I don't not know the person telling the story could not say. Reading a few posts I see Mr. Dolan is being reinstated back into the local Fire Department. Who cares this is the Fire Departments issue. In past posts I have said the Village, The Fire District, and The Fire Department should all be investigated by the proper authorities, there are by far way too meany story's of corruption, misappropriation of funds, and a slew of other criminal wrong doings that must be addressed. The stories that are being passed around involve civil servants form all walks of life from the FDNY, NYPD, as well as the Mayor it's time for and end to this. Everyone put this to rest nothing is ever going to be resolved until higher ups perform a full investigation on everyone in power in this town. Tomorrow I will be in church praying for everyone's well being. Have a Merry Christmas and a Healthy prosperous New year.
mick December 21, 2013 at 06:44 PM
Thanks Phil. He did what he had to do then. I hope this is the end of it too. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Phil McCracken December 21, 2013 at 07:25 PM
I think there are way too meany people on here with a false agenda. If you all know so much about wrong doings do something. If you say wait and see your full of it! This whole thing is a giant joke. As stated until a higher authority I gets involved the same bull will continue this includes everyone including the Me. Dolan. Those who defend with passion have something to gain those who don't, don't care. People it is what it is . Welcome to New Hyde Park
Hello December 21, 2013 at 07:58 PM
Yes, oh ,I most certainly agree!
Tommy Crenshaw December 22, 2013 at 07:11 AM
Hmm, ok, let me make sure I got this right-- they allegedly were cut off , we're cursed out and then , in retaliation, punched the guy who cut them off so hard that it broke his tooth. Now since it's Sunday morning and we're all preparing to go to Mass and are about to celebrate the birth of our Lord, what would Jesus have done in that situation? Yeah, I guess he would have punched the guy in the face with such a force. As Tiny Tim Cratchit said "God bless us, everyone!" Merry Christmas!! Peace.
Hello December 22, 2013 at 09:38 AM
Wait Thomas, you did forgot the part about the man allegedy approaching the car door to open it, (for what, possibly to pull a woman out of the car? ) We are entitled to our own opinions, but let the apparent video camera roll and let us see what the judge in "court" decides , because, truly, that is where it matters. Let me know what you hear. Peace!
Tommy Crenshaw December 22, 2013 at 10:40 AM
I didn't forget anything. Yeah, the guy who cut off Dolan then, for no known reason, got out of his car and attempted to open one of the doors of Dolan's car. Does that really make sense? Sounds like whoever told you the story "forgot" to tell you some key details such as what would cause the driver who cut off Dolan to then get out of his car and approach Dolan's and attempt to open the door. And why wasn't he arrested, if that's what happened. Merrrrry Christmas everyone!!
Hello December 22, 2013 at 10:56 AM
Dude, makes sense to me! Let us not forget we both not witnesses there, and this is all "speculation," remember? :) Let the courts decide, they have the facts, ( we all do not ) and that is where it matters most, not here. Merry Merry!
Phil McCracken December 22, 2013 at 07:28 PM
I think this story has gotten more posts than any other Patch story! More than men and women coming home from war, or even good news stories. I agree I don't think beating a dead horse is going to make anything better, I say leave this alone the courts and the people will decide as to what the fate is of this individual, there are way too meany details that are know and unknown and this can go on forever. Have a Merry Christmas everyone I just don't have the mental steam to go any further on this topic.
Tommy Crenshaw December 23, 2013 at 05:06 AM
True. For now all we have is the published account of that day. Hopefully this violent act was justified and the stain bestowed on New Hyde Park will be lifted. But then again, what do I care ? I live in Jersey! Have a nice life!
mick December 23, 2013 at 09:42 AM
Amen Phil! Merry Christmas.
