New Hyde Park Man Charged in Water Mill Hit-and-Run, DWI

A New Hyde Park man was arrested and charged with a hit-and-run as well as DWI this past Sunday in the Southampton hamlet of Water Mill.

Jeffrey Lawrence, 35, was arrested June 30 at 5:04 a.m. in Water Mill after he allegedly hit a bicyclist and left the scene at 2:02 a.m. at 1054 Montauk Highway in Water Mill.

According to the arrest report, Lawrence was pulled over by police because his vehicle matched the damage and evidence at the accident scene. He was found to have slurred speech and breath that smelled of alcohol, and he performed poorly on all field sobriety tests, the report stated. He was additionally cited for refusing a breath screening test, police said.

He is charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident with a personal injury, both misdemeanors, as well as moving from a lane unsafely and making an improper turn without signaling, both traffic infractions.
