New Hyde Park Woman Arrested on Assault Charges

Hazel Gutierrez-Torres allegedly hit police officer after authorities responded to disturbance at her apartment.

A New Hyde Park woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of an assault that police say occurred at an apartment on Jericho Turnpike.

According to detectives, at 5:33 p.m. on Sept. 11, officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment at 102 Jericho Turnpike involving Hazel Gutierrez-Torres, 21, and a 24 year old male.

As police were conducting their investigation, Gutierrez-Torres allegedly became enraged and struck an officer in the right eye. A struggle ensued and both the officer and Gutierrez-Torres fell to the floor causing an injury to the officer’s left shoulder.

Gutierrez-Torres was eventually taken into custody. The officer was removed to an area hospital where she was treated and released for her injuries.

Gutierrez-Torres was charged with second degree assault and will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday, Sept. 12.
