Update: NHPFD Responding to Many Calls During Irene
Chief John Willers estimated the department had about 20 since Irene started.
The was slated to end being on standby at about 1 p.m., said at about 12:30 p.m. Between then and the start of the storm, he estimated that the department responded to about 20 different calls.
Some areas were receiving repeat calls, he added.
Since 12:30 p.m., the department has helped with an elderly man who ran into the McDonald's on Jericho Turnpike with his car and a sparking power line near the Long Island Rail Road station, to name a few.

Update: At about 7 p.m., the fire department came to Premier Boulevard and 10th Avenue to secure the area around a down power line.
Chief Brian Sherwood said members of the department were caution taping off the area.
