Update: Chlorine Spill at Tully Park

Three people were taken to the hospital and are in good condition.

Nassau County Police say they responded to a report of a chlorine spill at at 7:43 a.m. on Thursday.

There was some type of chlorine that had spilled in one of the basements and a few people were taken to the hospital, according to police.

Update: A spokesman noted that three employees were experiencing eye irritation and labored breathing and subsequently called the police. All three employees are in good condition but still at for further observation.

This incident was caused by a mechanical failure that the Town suspects caused a chlorine contamination. It's unknown at this time what the chlorine may have been contaminated with, the spokesman said.

The officer anticipated that the spill had been contained later that morning. The mechanical issue will hopefully be fixed by this weekend, according to the spokesman.

"This has never happened before," the spokesman said, adding that the Town is looking into the causes of the incident.

The pool is closed and will be until the Town is satisfied that this incident has been properly reviewed, the spokesman said.

An honest article should be written about the gross miss-managment at this pool. Millions of our tax dollars are waisted daily as this pool struggles to deal with leaks due to disgraceful re-building and repairs on repairs on repairs. Now they can't even manage the chlorine levels. How long has the pool been closed b/c of this?? It's still closed today 5/23. The miss-mangement by the Town of NH should honestly be discussed. Our schools have to disclose each dollar spent- clearly the town gets a pass on everything.....

DS, those are good points. Thank you for bringing them up. We are working on a more in-depth story about the pool.

For 30 years I was a member of the Tully Pool Early Bird Swim and saw the neglect that resulted in closing that place down for years -- the new Tully pool is a disgrace it has gone from an aquatics center to a kiddie theme park that no one used when it was open for FREE for several months before it was closed again because of leaks. That slide most kids have had enough of it after 3 times up and doen and parents will NOT pay for that kind of activity.
Memberships are way down former members are swimming at Hofstra Uninversity Swim Center. The new Tully Pool is disaster and poised to lose record levels of money now that it has been transformed into a kiddie theme park that no one will ever use. Good going Jon Kamian!

WARNING: FIRST RESPONDERS' use of THE CHLORINE INSTITUTE "C" KIT may cause the catastrophic failure of a chlorine tank car, instantly creating a toxic gas plume with a distance of not less than seven miles. The first mile will have chlorine concentrations of 1,000 ppm, causing death after one or two breaths with no opportunity for escape. TO learn more, see PETITION C KIT, click on "First Responder Warnings."
