Powerful Storm Approaches New Hyde Park

New Hyde Park could get hit with snow and high winds, but forecast is still sketchy.

Get ready, New Hyde Park. A powerful storm system developing in the Midwest has the potential to bring several inches of snow, powerful winds and coastal flooding to Long Island over the next 36 hours.

The National Weather Service says forecast models haven't pinpointed the exact path and timing of the system. The Midwestern storm could intensify and combine with an ocean system and become another nor'easter, some forecast models project.

Meteorologists call for the storm to strike late Tuesday evening and into the day Wednesday. But the type of preciptation is a question mark: Forecasters say it's too early to say whether the moisture will come in the form of rain or snow when it arrives on Long Island.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for possibly several inches of snow, winds of 35 to 45 mph and gusts up to 60 mph and minor to moderate coastal flooding. High surf and significant beach erosion, especially to those beaches still battered from Hurricane Sandy, is also expected from the storm system.
