The fire seems to have started in the basement, according to the Arson Bomb Squad detectives. There were two people in the home at the time: the male homeowner and a female home health aide, according to the Arson Bomb Squad report. Both of those people got out of the house without getting hurt.

The New Hyde Park Fire Department as well as nine other local volunteer departments responded to the fire with 120 firefighters at the area, according to the Arson Bomb Squad report. Six of those firefighters were hurt in the basement of the house when a sudden burst of flames knocked them all to the ground, the report said, and they were taken to area hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation. One firefighter was taken to North Shore University Hospital and released, according to the report; three were taken to Winthrop University Hospital,  two were released while another one was admitted to the hospital and is in "serious and guarded condition"; another two firefighters were taken to Nassau University Medical Center where one was released and another was admitted also in "serious and guarded condition."

The Arson Bomb Squad as well as the Nassau County Fire Marshal are investigating the fire and were at the scene.

The American Red Cross' volunteers also came to the scene of the fire, according to spokesman Sam Kille. The group is giving the two people who were in the house temporary shelter in a local motel as well as money for food and clothes, he added.
