Update: Sparks Blocks from New Hyde Park High

A power line entangled in a downed tree is lighting some of those branches on fire.

Update: New Hyde Park Fire Chief Steven Waldron said the Long Island Power Authority cut the power to this area; Patch learned of this around 1 p.m.

A power line that was taken down by a fallen tree near the corner of West End Avenue and Leonard Boulevard is wrapped in the tree's branches and starting a small fire.

Chief Steven Waldron explained that the department has gotten about a half dozen calls about this tree and he encourages people to continue calling if they are concerned. LIPA has been alerted to the situation and Waldron said they will come down around 5 p.m. Until then, "not much can be done," Waldron said.
