Train Hits Person Near New Hyde Park LIRR Station Friday Morning

Unidentified male pronounced dead at the scene.

An unidentified male was struck and killed on the Long Island Railroad tracks near the New Hyde Park train station Friday morning, causing service to be suspended.

The LIRR sent out an e-mail alert at about 11 a.m. indicating that an unauthorized person on the tracks had been struck by an unoccupied non-passenger train near the station.

The train was traveling eastbound and struck the person at about 10:40 a.m. according to a LIRR spokesman.

The medical examiner pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The circumstances of the death are being investigated.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

LIRR service was suspended between Jamaica and Hicksville for about two hours following the accident.

Update: 12 p.m.: vehicular traffic is being allowed through the at-grade crossings of New Hyde Park Road and South 12th Street. LIRR service is still suspended.

Update: 12:30 p.m.: Service remains temporarily suspended between Jamaica and Hicksville. The medical examiner is on the scene and and service is anticipated to be restored within the next 15-20 minutes.

Update: 1 p.m.: service between Jamaica and Hicksville has been restored.
