Tuesday was a day that one senior New Hyde Park resident was thankful to have utility crews in the village, particularly when one happened to foil an attempted robbery.
According to Third Precinct detectives, at about 9 a.m. on Nov. 13, Brian P. Maher, 29, (no known address) stole a pocketbook while struggling with a 80-year-old female victim in the vicinity of Jericho Turnpike and Ingram Lane.
The 82-year-old husband of the victim attempted to stop the defendant, but fell to the ground and received lacerations and contusions to his head and face and injuries to his left knee and hand.
Upon seeing the incident, a 38-year-old male electrical utility worker who was working nearby was able to hold Maher until police arrived and placed him under arrest without incident.
The victim’s husband was transported by police ambulance to Winthrop-University Hospital and was treated and released.
Maher is being charged with two counts of second degree robbery. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday.
