Checking Parking Rules in New Hyde Park Village

There was an issue about a property and its parking on Second Avenue that was addressed by the New Hyde Park Village board.

At the April 5 board meeting, there were concerns raised by residents about a property on Second Avenue between South Fourth and South Fifth streets. Some of these concerns were addressed at the April 19 Village board meeting.

Tom Gannon, head of the Building Department, visited the property in question and explained that from a parking standpoint the North side of Second Avenue between South Fourth and South Fifth streets has a sign posted designating it a loading zone and no parking. In the code book, this is supposed to be a loading zone "with footage," Gannon said, adding that he measured said footage and it doesn't match up.

On the South side of this street, which is against the tracks, there are signs that call this a loading zone but Gannon did not find anything in the rule book designating this a loading zone.

"I'm not sure if a resolution was ever made and the code never made it into the book," Gannon said. He added that he's in the process of finding information that might show how this became a loading zone.

Deputy Mayor Lofaro said he believes that there were discussions with Hall Flooring to make this area a loading zone but he can't remember what year it was.

A resident cited that this loading zone typically has cars parked in it for hours. Lofaro noted that this type of zone is supposed to be used to load and unload items.

Lofaro explained the history of that area saying that those were voucher parking spots that were not being used and then meters were put in place on the North side of this block, which eliminated the voucher parking, and loading zones were put in.
