Controlling The Density of New Hyde Park

Village Trustee Lawrence Montreuil said he has some concerns about second kitchens and the density they add to the area.

During Tuesday evening's meeting, Trustee Lawrence Montreuil discussed building permits and how the area is getting more dense. Below is a transcript of what he expressed during the meeting.

The Zoning Board of Appeal met on April 13 and heard two cases -- one at 510 South 13th Street, which was approved, and 601 Stewart Avenue, which was approved. The second granting a request for a second kitchen and I understand there was also an enlargement at the facility as well.

I've said month after month that I guess that we have a waning number of building permits which I guess is driven by the poor economy. Naturally people have less disposable income to invest in their houses. I know I myself have deferred fixing my driveway for some time. But it's really now more than ever we really need to maintain the standards of the Village less it deteriorate into an area that's less than desirable or less than we expect. We all made significant investments in our homes and it's important to keep those values up.

I'm personally seeing some disrepair, particularly in cases of absentee landlords. And it pains me to see another second kitchen go on the roles here. It's basically another increase in density of the home and I think it high time that we took that outdated law off the books. So that's my own little commentary.
