A new paved patio at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter in Port Washington features bricks inscribed with tributes to residents’ pets. Also available is wireless internet connection.

The patio, named “Paws to Remember,” was made possible through collaboration with the Shelter Connection, the Animal Shelter’s not-for-profit partner.  The project was completed at no-cost to the taxpayers, as the construction was funded by the sale of pavers to residents who wished to permanently memorialize their current pets or their pets of years gone.

The patio, adorned with wrought iron outdoor furniture, was financed by the sale of the inscribed bricks, relieving taxpayers from having to foot the bill. More than 70 pavers have been sold so far.

The capital improvement project is the second phase of a three-phase plan to upgrade the Animal Shelter. The first phase was completed in 2008 and involved expanding the front lobby and waiting area. Phase three, a planned extension of the dog kennels, is yet to be scheduled.

The shelter has dogs available for adoption and enforces local and state animal protection, control and licensing laws, and administering town dog control services.

For more information on the shelter or adopting a pet, call 311.
