Four Cooling Stations in North Hempstead Open for Second Heat Wave

Centers expected to remain open all day Friday to help residents beat the heat.

As temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90’s Friday with a heat index of 101, cooling stations will be open around Nassau County for residents looking to beat the heat.

In North Hempstead cooling stations will be located at  and at , both in the Village of New Hyde Park. Two other centers will be open at Manorhaven Beach Park and Charles J. Fuschillo Park at Carle Road at Broadmoor Lane in Carle Place, the latter of which will open at noon.

The expected hours of operation of the other cooling stations are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Additional cooling stations will also be open in Rockville Centre at the  and in the Town of Oyster Bay at the Hicksville Community Center.

The Nassau County Health Department is also offering the following tips to protect residents and their families against high temperatures:

  • Check on relatives and friends, especially the elderly.
  • Increase time spent in an air-conditioned environment.
  • Increase non-alcoholic fluid intake.
  • Take cool baths.
  • Individuals especially at risk, such as the elderly or those with chronic illnesses should refrain from physical activity, avoid being alone, keep their sleeping area well ventilated, and avoid falling asleep in a hot room.
  • Eat light, but nutritious foods.
  • Avoid the sun at the hottest times of the day.
  • Wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothing.

Senior citizens, infants, and many individuals with chronic medical conditions are at high risk for heat-related problems and should be very cautious about exposure.

If any person experiences heat stroke or exhaustion, get medical help immediately.
