Herricks Trying to Propose Illegal Student Legislation

School district seeking to get financial compensation from illegal tenants in the community.

After a number of years coping with illegal tenants within its area, the Herricks School District is trying to work with the state legislature to enact rules to take monetary recourse from those illegals who have children educated in the district.

Currently, if an illegal tenant is found to be living in the district and having their children attend the district, Herricks does not have a channel to receive tuition for the time the child attended the district. During the regular meeting of the board of education last Thursday night at the , Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth said that the district can get tuitition from families who are bringing their children in from other areas.

With this potential legislation, the district would be able to recoup tuition from these families who resided in the district illegaly.

The district has been working with the to help find families who reside in the district ilegally as well as on this legislation.

Assistant Superintendent of Business Helen Costigan explained that depending on the services a child is receiving in the district, the tuition could be about $40,000 to $60,000 per pupil.
