Jericho Turnpike Repaving Begins in New Hyde Park

After experiencing numerous delays, Thursday night at about 9:30 p.m., New York State contractors finally began work on the resurfacing project along Jericho Turnpike.

The project in New Hyde Park is expected to take the majority of this week to complete according to estimates, with crews working primarily at night.

Lanes on Jericho Turnpike between Cherry Lane and New Hyde Park Road in New Hyde Park will be closed and shifted in each direction each night, Monday through Friday, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. weather permitting, to accommodate construction operations.

However, a single travel lane in each direction will remain open to drivers throughout the night.

These night time closures are needed to perform pavement repair and resurfacing work that would be too disruptive to the high volume of traffic in this area during the day. Motorists are being warned in advance of the closings via electronic road signs but should plan ahead and use alternate routes to avoid delays.

The span of Jericho Turnpike within the village is being resurfaced, the old, worn pavement surface and markings are being removed and the installation of new pavement surface and markings will take place.

Crews had already gone through the village during the late summer months conducting preliminary work on sidewalks and handicapped accessible ramps.

In Garden City Park, crews have already completed constructing concrete center medians which will be used as traffic calming and safety measures as well as for beautification purposes.

The entire repaving project runs the length of Jericho Turnpike from the New York City line in Floral Park to Glen Cove Road and will be completed by the end of 2013. The project was originally supposed to end at Herricks Road just outside the village, but was extended through efforts of NY state Sen. Jack Martins and Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss.

Sen. Martins had recently met with officials from villages along Jericho Turnpike, letting them address questions or concerns and that the entirety of the project would be conducted at night so as to impact the communities as little as possible.

Once crews have completed work in Mineola, they will then return to the city line in Flroal Park and begin the repaving of the remainder of Jerocho Turnpike.
