Jericho Turnpike Repaving Nearly Done in Garden City Park

State contractors lay fresh asphalt up to Country Courthouse Road in Garden City Park Tuesday.

The repaving of Jericho Turnpike will soon be coming to a close as construction crews will soon be finished with laying new asphalt down on Route 25. Crews were seen early Tuesday morning on Jericho and County Courthouse Road in Garden City Park near the old Pergament building resurfacing the four-lane road after having paved up to Nassau Boulevard late last week.

Lanes on Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park will be closed and shifted in each direction each night, Monday through Friday, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. weather permitting, to accommodate construction operations.

However, a single travel lane in each direction will remain open to drivers throughout the night.

These night time closures are needed to perform pavement repair and resurfacing work that would be too disruptive to the high volume of traffic in this area during the day. Motorists are being warned in advance of the closings via electronic road signs but should plan ahead and use alternate routes to avoid delays.

The entire span of Jericho Turnpike from the Queens line to Glen Cove Road is being resurfaced, the old, worn pavement surface and markings are being removed and the installation of new pavement surface and markings will take place.

Crews had already gone through the area earlier during the summer months conducting preliminary work on sidewalks and handicapped accessible ramps.

In the western end of Garden City Park, crews have already completed constructing concrete center medians which will be used as traffic calming and safety measures as well as for beautification purposes. Though repaving has been completed in New Hyde Park, the brick medians still must be put in place. Some crews were seen Sunday near Applebee's in New Hyde Park installing the brick pavers in the medians from large pallets.

The entire repaving project runs the length of Jericho Turnpike from the New York City line in Floral Park to Glen Cove Road and will be completed by the end of 2013. The project was originally supposed to end at Herricks Road just outside the village, but was extended through Mineola thanks to the efforts of NY state Sen. Jack Martins and Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss.

Sen. Martins had met with officials from villages along Jericho Turnpike, letting them address questions or concerns and that the entirety of the project would be conducted at night so as to impact the communities as little as possible.

Once crews completed work in Mineola, the returned to the city line in Floral Park and began the repaving of the remainder of Jericho Turnpike.
