Martins Encourages Food Donations

Drop boxes are in many local village halls, including New Hyde Park.

State Senator Jack Martins, R-Mineola, encouraged residents of his district to donate food while he attended the Cold Spring Harbor Band concert in the William Gill Jr. theater on Aug. 3.

"They feed literally hundreds of thousands of people on Long Island every year," Martins said of the Harry Chapin food bank. "They told us that unfortunately during the summer, that's their downtime. They get lots of donations during the holiday time, but for some reason over the summer there's a dip."

As a result of that, Martins is asking people to donate food this month. There are also food donation boxes at pools and libraries, Martins added.
