Nearby: Skateboarding Limits Considered

After receiving multiple complaints from village residents, theis proposing a skateboarding ban on Fairview Road and Yoakum Street due to safety concerns. At its Aug. 27, meeting, the board referred to the skating as "extreme" and said the boarders that use the streets are known to travel down into intersections, making the hills on both roads a hazard for both themselves and drivers.

At first, sightings of supposedly needy families holding signs asking for money at stores along Veterans Highway and Nesconset Highway prompted Long Islanders to graciously open their wallets to help. However, some now fear the panhandlers may be scamming people and exploiting children after the adults holding the signs were allegedly spotted with different children in their company.

Former Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy now officially has three jobs, four if you count active grandparenting time. The Bayport resident is now of counsel for Campolo, Middleton and McCormick, a Bohemia-based law firm credited with the legal victory of striking down the MTA payroll tax last week.

The Babylon Town Board will hold a special meeting Tuesday to determine how to proceed in regard to a residential garbage collection with Jody Enterprises.  The meeting comes on the heels of the arrest of two men, whom officials said worked as managers for Jody and were involved in a recycling scheme that involved hauling recyclables meant for the Town of Smithtown's recycling facility to a salvage business in West Babylon, where they are alleged to have sold them for personal profit.

Nassau County residents burdened by an excessive amount of noisy planes flying over their homes may find relief by focusing their efforts on an existing federal regulation. Speaking at Monday's meeting of the Town-Village Aircraft Safety and Noise Abatement Commitee (TVASNAC), Henry Young, president of Young Environmental Scientists, presented his “immediate action plan,” which suggests the board pursue a regulation called Part 150. This requires the Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of NY and NJ, which operates JFK airport, to conduct a study of its environmental practices including noise abatement.

Ken Weprin, a Hofstra Pride public address announcer for more than 20 years, recently said that he will retire. Weprin has announced Hofstra Pride's men’s and women’s basketball games at the Hofstra Physical Education Center and at the Mack Sports Complex since the 1989-90 season.

The Save Seaford Sports Committee is down to the wire in its efforts to salvage the fall athletic teams not included in the district's 2012/13 budget.  After fundraisers this summer by Save Seaford Sports, the organization is in need of $31,000 by Sept. 5 in order to restore middle school football, boys and girls soccer, field hockey and cheerleading. Seaford's $57.8 million budget  in May includes funding for the Seaford Middle School spring season but not the fall and winter.
