New Hyde Park Auxiliary Police Keep Busy in April

Three members of department recognized by Nassau County for time spent on patrol.

The New Hyde Park Auxiliary Police Department kept themselves busy during the month of April and have a full summer slate ahead of them as well according to officer John Concannon, who issued the department’s bimonthly update during a meeting of the village board on May 7 at the village hall.

The department lent two cars and three officers to assist at the recent Long Island Marathon on May 4.

“Plenty of police presence, all sorts of units were there, K9, drugs, radiation,” Concannon said. “As far as I know, nothing of tremendous import happened, the runners were all safe, I don’t even think anyone fell down or needed medical aid.”

On May 25 the department will also be at the village’s annual memorial day parade.

“We’ve changed the way that we’re going to close off the streets,” Concannon said. “Instead of just using the yellow tape and highway cones, which people don’t always pay attention to, we’ll have some regular barriers up and that’ll make it easier for the rest of us to go around and assist us as the parade moves from stop to stop.”

Auxiliary officers will also be at the North Hempstead salute to veterans and fireworks display at Bar Beach that night. On May 27 they will be at the Alberston VFW parade and the auxiliary will also have a car there.

The department also is busy on June 8 with the Belmont Stakes, June 23 with the fourth annual Katie’s Run 5K/2-mile run, and their presence at the summer concert series beginning on June 19 at Memorial Park.

In reporting suspicious activity, Concannon asked residents not to hesitate to call 911.

“We go by and nothing happens, an hour later something can happen,” he said.

Concannon also noted that three members of the department were recognized by Nassau County, receiving “300-hour” awards for performing 300-plus hours of service within a 12-month period. He said the members could possibly come to the next meeting of the village board.
