New Hyde Park Awarded $125,000 in Community Development Grants

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Thursday that $125,000 of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) would be awarded to the Village of New Hyde Park. The grant will fund a variety of projects in the village, including streetscape improvements and commercial façade enhancement that will complement already-completed sidewalk improvements, newly installed decorative street lights, pocket parks and new brick paving.

CDBG money will also go towards assisting low-income residents with residential weatherization improvements and will also be used to match forthcoming New York State Department of Transportation funds.

“It’s a great day when Nassau County can utilize Federal funds to truly help revitalize local neighborhoods, and improve the quality of life for residents,” Mangano said in a statement. “These funds will greatly assist the Village of New Hyde Park in their efforts to enhance local businesses, spur job creation and improve infrastructure.”

Nassau , R-New Hyde Park added that he was “proud to support this grant for the Village of New Hyde Park. The Village has consistently put these federal grant funds to the best possible use and has plans to do even more for the community.”

The Community Development Block Grant Program is a Federal entitlement program with a primary objective of developing viable urban communities through sensible housing and suitable living initiatives.  The program also seeks to expand economic opportunities, principally for individuals of low and moderate income.

Allocations for the Village of New Hyde Park include:

• $50,000 for commercial rehabilitation on Jericho Turnpike between Ingraham Lane and Hillside Boulevard. The project planning includes assisting downtown building owners with exterior improvements, new lighting and signs for greater uniformity and code compliance;
• $50,000 for new and improved public facilities and infrastructure improvements for very low, low, and moderate income households in downtown New Hyde Park; and
• $25,000 to maintain stock of affordable housing by provision of loans and/or grants to low and moderate income homeowners to eliminate code violations and make needed improvements.

“The Community Development Block Grant program has provided the Village of New Hyde Park with the funding necessary to continue the revitalization of our downtown,” New Hyde Park Mayor Daniel Petruccio said in a statement. “We appreciate the support and guidance that we have received from Nassau County throughout the long journey toward the project’s completion.  We look forward to continuing this relationship in the future.”
