New Hyde Park Grapples with 2013 Snow Season

Blizzard forecasted for this weekend on Long Island.

The Village of New Hyde Park is facing once more a dilemma in the winter after just coming off a snow report which turned out to be a dusting and forecasts of a blizzard looming for later in the week.

Last week the decision was made to send out village crews with snowfall that turned out to be little to nothing in the area.

“The challenge is we’ve gotten dustings and when you get a dusting, do you put plows out?” deputy mayor Robert Lofaro said during a meeting at the village hall on February 5. “Usually three inches is the guideline when we start putting plows out but is it enough snow to put down sand and salt? Sometimes it’s debatable.”

Village superintendent of public works Tom Gannon and the department of public works crew evaluate and make decisions regarding the snowfall and even though following the last dusting the ensuing forecast was for warmer weather and snow melting, Gannon said that crews did go out on Sunday morning to clear and prep the roads.

“We will always evaluate the roads, we’ll have our crews out there as well as doing sidewalks and stuff like that,” Lofaro said. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed; every day we get by a winter day with no snow is a good day.”

Residents are reminded to shovel snow from around the fire hydrants if one is located in front of their homes and to make sure that their house numbers are clearly visible following a snowstorm.
