New Hyde Park Village Board Continues Work on Budget

Mayor Daniel Petruccio briefly mentions upcoming budget.

Mayor Daniel Petruccio touched upon the upcoming budget during Tuesday night’s meeting of the village board at the village hall. Although the board hass not yet completed its budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year, the mayor said that he is optimistic.

“We usually start out in a range of about sometimes upwards of a 15 percent tax increase and what we basically do in the budget meetings is sit there and systematically go line by line and whittle down the numbers to get it to a number we can as a board live with it,” he said.

The board also must incorporate contractual numbers and a number of other costs which they already know they have to pay, such as pensions.

“This year when we ran the numbers to start, we were in a much better place.  We’re starting at about 6.5 percent,” Petruccio said.

Although the figure is lower than the 15 percent the board has used in the past, the mayor isn’t sure how much lower they can go.

“We have worked for 12 years to trim fat from this budget to the point where there really is no fat to be trimmed,” Petruccio said.

The mayor complimented the various village department heads for helping to keep the budget minimal, saying they have done a good job of keeping costs low and only spending money when completely necessary.

The board is still working on the budget. No specific numbers have yet been released.
