New Hyde Park Village Board Notebook: April 16

Other news from the April 16 village board meeting.

The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, April 16. Here are some things you may have missed.

Jericho Turnpike Project

  • The design area in the state department of transportation has approved plans for the continuation of the Jericho Turnpike project as of April 16.
  • The plans would now go to the planning department who would issue permission for the village to go out to bid, which trustee Donald Barbieri anticipated would be in the days following the meeting.
  • “After many, many years and spinning my wheels sometimes... it’s super gratifying,” Barbieri said.
New Hyde Park Museum
  • Barbieri also reported that the village has an architectural group coming in about the design of the room for the New Hyde Park Village Museum while another committee reporting about cabinetry and frames for displays in the room.
  • Another committee had catalogued all of the photos and newspaper clippings that former village trustee and historian Florence Lisanti had collected over the years.
  • “We’re in pretty good shape to move forward,” Barbieri said, noting that the museum committee meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m.
Department of Public Works
  • The village department of public works is currently out repairing potholes, some of which are being saw-cut in order to provide longer-lasting patchwork.
  • Any resident wishing to have a tree planted by their home should please contact the village department of public works. Superintendent of public works Tom Gannon stated that they currently have 30-40 homes on the list but would like to get approximately 60. The village is planning on ordering another 30-40 additional trees.
Personnel
  • Benjamin Truncale was introduced as the new village attorney, replacing John Spellman, who stepped down as village attorney in order to focus on the Village of Mineola. Truncale is a member of Spellman’s law firm, Garden City-based Spellman, Rice, Schure, Gibbons, McDonough & Polizzi.
  • The board approved the hiring of Steven Feldman with a start date on or before April 24 with an hourly rate of $13.40.
Use Requests
  • The VFW G&E Linder Post 8031 requested use of Marcus Christ Hall on June 5, September 4, October 2, November 6, December 4, March 5, 2014, April 2, 2014 and May 7, 2014.
  • American Legion Ernie Pyle Post 1089 requested use of Marcus Christ Hall on the third Thursday of every month except July and August from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Cellini Lodge requested the use of Marcus Christ Hall on the second Thursday of each month.
  • Cub Scout Pack 489 requested the use of Marcus Christ Hall to hold a ceremony on Friday, May 10 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
License Renewals
The following businesses were granted license renewals:

  • taxi cab/ limo owner: K & G Services.

  • Building Department
    • The zoning board of appeals met on April 10 and approved two cases: 500 North Third St. (special exception permit); 524 North Second St. (fell second story addition). The next meeting of the zoning board of appeals will be on May 8 at 7:30 p.m. There is one case currently on the docket: 1513 Belmont Ave. (full second-story addition and rear and side-yard allowance encroachment).
    • The architectural review board met on April 3 and approved a new sign for the Roslyn Savings Bank at 1114 Jericho Turnpike. A presentation was also made for 549 Sixth Ave. where a second-floor addition in front of the house with a first-floor vestibule, finished basement and egress windows for the basement. The architectural review board will meet on May 1 and hear the following cases: 642 South Twelfth St. (full two-story addition) and 1513 Belmont Ave. (full second-story addition and rear and side-yard allowance encroachment).
    • The planning board met to consider a waiver of a subdivision at 1300 Jericho Turnpike.
    • The building department has issued 20 building permits during the period of April 1-12.
    Other Board News
    • Mayor Robert Lofaro asked that if residents observe any individuals in the parks after hours when the gates are locked to call 911 as some vandalism occurred over the April 13-14 weekend.
    • The board approved a special use permit for the addition of a kitchen cooking facility at the bakery to be known as SweeTart at 1200 Jericho Turnpike.
    • The following car wash applications were approved: Cub Scout Pack 489: June 1; New Hyde Park Road School Sixth Grade PTA: July 20.
    • The village’s annual Memorial Day Parade will be held on May 25 beginning at 10 a.m. on Hillside Boulevard.
    The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board will be on Tuesday, May 7 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
