New Hyde Park Village Board Notebook: August 20

Other news from the August 20 village board meeting.

The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, August 20. Here are some things you may have missed.

Stem Cell Trial for Trustee

  • Trustee Donald Barbieri announced that he would take part in a stem cell clinical trial to treat muscular sclerosis, which which he is afflicted.
  • Barbieri stated that he had been selected about a year ago but the FDA had pplaced a hold on the trial not allowing it to proceed.
  • On August 13 – Barbieri’s birthday – he was notified that the FDA had released the trial and allowed to proceed.
  • “Sometime before the end of this calendar year I will begin this study and we’re all excited about it,” he said.

FEMA Funding

  • The village is still waiting on about $30,000 in FEMA funds relating to cleanup from Hurricanes Irene and Sandy.
  • The village has received $530,000 in federal money and the state will pick up the remainder of the project which comes to about $32,000.
  • Mayor Robert Lofaro said the total number was about $630,000 that the village was expecting.

Parking Limit Violations on 17th Street

  • A pair of residents from 17th Street residents complained of “gross violations” of the one-hour parking limit at southern end of their block.
  • The residents stated that there are between three to five cars that park “on a daily basis” at the location “all day” and that they reported it to the code officer as well as superintendent of public works Tom Gannon, but the behavior is still ongoing.
  • Mayor Lofaro said that the village has a few areas where some businesses move cars slightly in order to rotate markings so they do not receive a violation.
  • The village tracks the movement of parked vehicles by the positioning of the tires’ valve stems.
  • Gannon believed the owners of the vehicles to be workers on Plaza Avenue as throughout the day “they’re still parked there, but they’re moved.”

New Hyde Park Farmer's Market

  • The farmer’s market which has been held on Saturdays in the parking lot on the northwest corner of Jericho Turnpike and New Hyde Park Road has asked the village to continue to allow it to hold the market throughout the winter in Marcus Christ Hall.
  • The board declined the request due to other usage of the hall and “we didn’t know what the market might turn into in the winter time; it’s not local grown type of product,” mayor Lofaro said.
  • The farmers market closes in November.

Graffiti at Bus Stop

  • Complaints regarding graffiti on plexiglass enclosure at the bus stop in the pocket park on South Sixth Street were heard by the board.
  • “Graffiti’s not good but at least it’s not vulgar,” Lofaro said.

Use Requests

  • The New Hyde Park North Lions Club requested the use of Marcus Christ Hall on Sept. 27 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for “Bunco Night,” a membership drive event that centers around a game played with dice for points. No money or betting is involved.

Building Department

  • The zoning board of appeals met on Aug. 5 and heard one case: 125 North Fifth St. for a full second story. The application was approved. On July 11 the zoning board approved an application for 253 Jericho Turnpike for the portion of the first floor to be used as a learning center.
  • The architectural review board met on Sept. 4 for a hearing on 406 Brill Place for construction of a full second story addition.
  • The village court heard a case on July 24 on 405 Jericho Turnpike for a summons for failure to gain access to a rental unit as part of rental registration.
  • The building department issued 51 permits during the month of July, a 39 percent decrease over July 2012. In the year ending May 2013, the village had 607 permits as compared to 748, a decrease of 19 percent over 2012.

Other Board News

  • The following block party applications were approved: September 7 (rain date September 8) – Hoffman Road between Jericho Turnpike and Plaza Avenues from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; September 7 (no rain date) – Highland Avenue between Terrace Boulevard and Leonard Boulevard from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • The following business was granted a license: carter: Scherillo & Sons Construction Group doing business as Prestige Custom Builders of East Northport.
  • The New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce and the New Hyde Park Lions Club will hold their annual golf outing at Harbor Links on Oct. 2. More information will be on the chamber’s website.
  • Trustee Lawrence Montreuil represented the village at a meeting of various municipalities for a collective agreement for solid waste management and disposal.

The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board will be on Tuesday, September 17 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
