New Hyde Park Village Board Notebook: February 19

The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, February 19. Here are some things you may have missed.

Snow Cleanup

  • Deputy mayor Robert Lofaro commended the department of public works for their efforts in clearing the snow from the roads this past weekend.
  • “We were very fortunate that the storm did not hit us as it has in many other communities but we did get a substantial amount of snow,” he said. “Most residents woke up Saturday morning to see blacktop in front of their homes.”

  • The figure for expenses relating to Hurricane Sandy for the village is now estimated to be close to $375,000.
  • “We’re optimistic that a fair amount of expenses will be recovered,” Lofaro said. “We don’t know that it’s going to have a negative effect on our books.”
  • The department of public works is still working on identifying trees which will need to come down.
  • Superintendent of public works Tom Gannon also noted that a fence was replaced by the county across the street where the branches were stored after the storm.
  • Gannon reported that he put an order in for 10 replacement street lights but did not have an estimate for when they would arrive.
  • Locations include South Ninth Street, South 12th Street and the intersection of Fifth and Third.

Building Department

  • The zoning board of appeals met on February 13 and heard two cases: 915 Herricks Blvd. (approved 1-ft. variance on west side of the garage by the property line); 516 Ingraham Lane (variance granted for 1-ft. extension into side yard to accommodate a second floor addition). The next meeting of the zoning board of appeals will be on Wednesday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m.
  • The architectural review board met February 6 and heard three cases: 100 Lakeville Road (sign permit - approved); 1333 Lakeville Road “Sign-o-Rama” (sign permit - approved); 1501 Jericho Turnpike (exterior alterations for a mini-mart convenience store - approved). The next meeting of the architectural review board will be on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.
  • The building department issued 16 permits through February 15 and 10 certificates of occupancy.

  • Cub Scout Pack 489 requested use of Marcus Christ Hall on Friday February 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to hold pack night.

Other Board News

  • Auxiliary police officer John Concannon e-mailed trustee Richard Coppola noting that the side door to the village hall was open on Monday, which was a holiday and he could not lock the doors. Lofaro noted that the front and interior side door of the building are physically locked. It was noted that the auxiliary police only has a key to the basement door.
  • The board approved the selling of canned goods and other food items at the 99 Cent store on Jericho Turnpike. It also approved the application of the mini-mart at 1501 Jericho Turnpike.
  • The New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will hold their monthly meeting on February 21 at the New Hyde Park Inn at 6 p.m.
  • The period for filing for candidates for the village board has ended. All races will be uncontested this year.

The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board is on Tuesday, March 5 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
