New Hyde Park Village Board Notebook: July 16

Other news from the July 16 village board meeting.

The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, July 16. Here are some things you may have missed.

FEMA Funding

  • New Hyde Park will be receiving about $651,000 in FEMA funds stemming from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, $32,000 of which is estimated from the state and $2,000 of which has been collected.
  • Village officials stated that they should recover all of the money spent from unappropriated fund balance in storms.
  • The total amount the village should receive is $586,671.26 in federal funds.
  • As of July 16 the village received $531,869.86, which included a large check in the amount of $529,549.16 which came after the board meeting.
  • Originally the federal portion was only going to pay 75 percent of the damage but was then changed to 90 percent.

Community Center Roof

  • The new roof was recently installed on the Marcus Christ Community Center adjacent to village hall.
  • The final cost was $25,000 of which $6,200 was a grant from the NY State Legislature.
  • The cost came in about $6,000 over budget because according to mayor Robert Lofaro, contractors discovered that the roofing itself needed to be repaired and replacing 37 4x8 sheets of plywood.
  • “The good news, the amount of money we put in repairing that roof with legislative grants and so on, we believe now it’s done right and the interior should not receive any further damage,” he said.

Building Department

  • The zoning board of appeals met on July 11 and heard two cases: 1301 Washington Ave. (rebuilding of existing garage with modifications offsetting the property line); 253 Jericho Turnpike (postponed). The next meeting of the zoning board of appeals is August 14. There are no cases currently on the docket.
  • The architectural review board met on July 10 and heard a case on 125 North Fifth St. (full second story addition). The applicant at 1513 Belmont Ave. submitted revised plans which were accepted. The next meeting of the architectural review board will be on August 7 at 7:30 p.m. There are no cases currently scheduled.
  • The village court heard cases on June 19 with fines levied against a roofing contractor for two occasions for failure to secure a permit and two summonses for Empire Billiards. Both cases entered guilty pleas. The next village court session will be on July 24 at 6:30 p.m. with cases at 405 Jericho Turnpike and 906 Jericho Turnpike for failure to provide access for rental registration inspections.
  • The village issued 53 building permits between June 14 and July 12.

  • The village has collected about 95 percent of the tax bills. As of July 16 there were about 100 parcels outstanding.
  • The following car wash applications were approved: New Hyde Park Wildcats Firecats: August 17; New Hyde Park Wildcats Romanettes: August 24.
  • The following block party applications were approved: August 3 (rain date August 4) – North Second Street between Brooklyn and Lowell Avenues from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; August 3 (rain date August 4) – South 14th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.; August 10 (rain date August 17) – South 16th Street between Jericho Turnpike and Plaza Avenue from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., barricades will be set up north of Park Avenue and south of Lowell; August 10 (rain date August 17) – Ingraham Lane between Lowell and Park Avenue from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • The New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 31 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Walk Street Tavern.
  • The band “Stages” will perform on July 24 at Memorial Park at 7 p.m. as part of the village concert series.
  • A special use hearing will be heard on August 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the village hall for the expansion of an auto body shop at 910 Third Ave.

The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board will be on Tuesday, August 20 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
