New Hyde Park Village Board Notebook: June 18

Other news from the June 18 village board meeting.

The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, May 21. Here are some things you may have missed.

Boy Scout Troop 298

  • At an executive session on May 29 the board approved the sponsoring of Boy Scout Troop 298 by the village.
  • The troop had previously been sponsored by Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
  • “Through some discussions, they’re looking to move to our location,” mayor Robert Lofaro said.

Building Department

  • The zoning board of appeals met on June 12 and heard one cases: 809 Sixth Ave.(legalization of a rear deck). Two variances to support the legalization were denied.
  • The architectural review board met on June 5 and approved the following cases: SweeTart Bakery (sign application); 1313 Jericho Turnpike (spa denied an application for the existing orange awning which was put in place without benefit of a permit); 1513 Belmont Ave. (request for modification to home, more information requested). The next meeting of the architectural review board is on July 10 at 7:30 p.m. There are currently no cases on the docket.
  • The village court heard cases of a contractor operating without a permit and two summonses for Empire Billiards for operating without a permit and maintaining shades at a lower-than-permitted height.
  • The building department issued two summonses for failure to comply with rental registration on two properties.
  • The village is nearly complete with its spring tree planting program. Superintendent of public works Tom Gannon stated that the village would be doing an additional planting in the fall this year consisting of another 15-20 trees. Residents interested in having a tree planted in front of their homes should contact the village department of public works.
  • The roof of Marcus Christ Hall is scheduled to be replaced. According to Gannon the contractors are currently replacing a roof on New Hyde Park Road and at the completion of that job would move onto the community center.

  • The village received two checks from FEMA relating to damages from Hurricane Sandy totaling: $750 for insurance deductible and $1,187 for damage to the parks.
  • There are six different parts of FEMA to which the village has applied for disaster relief funding with the total being approximately $650,000.
  • The estimated cash expenditures of the village during cleanup after Hurricane Sandy was about $350,000 to $375,000 plus lost time and wages.

Other Board News

  • Also in executive session, the board refunded about $134,000 in certiorari tax settlements to overtaxed commercial properties along with reduced assessments.
  • Boy Scout Troop 298 requested a change in the date of their car wash application to June 29. Their previous application for June 8 was cancelled due to inclement weather.
  • The following businesses were granted license renewals: limousine owner: A.J. Enterprise Limo.
  • A New Hyde Park taxi company will be placing advertisements on the back of the village’s parking voucher books that are sold for the parking lots near the rail road. The advertisements have been part of an initiative by the village to open new revenue streams for the village.
  • The following block party applications were approved: July 13 (rain date July 27) – Millers Lane between Jericho Turnpike and Station Road from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; July 13 (rain date July 20) – Belmont Avenue between Leonard Boulevard and Terrace Avenue from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; August 3 (rain date August 10) – North Fifth Street between Brooklyn Avenue and Lowell Avenue from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.; August 10 (rain date August 11) – South 12th Street between Sixth Avenue and Stewart Avenue from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • The work on the records management grant obtained by the village is underway and should be completed within the next two weeks.
  • The New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will hold their monthly meeting on June 20 at Uncle Baccala’s in Garden City Park.
  • The village is working on a project to renovate/ replace the sign in front of the village hall that has been aged and faded.
  • The New Hyde Park Children’s Theater will be holding auditions for the October 203 production of the play “The Princess That Had No Name” on Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m. in the William Gill Theater on the second floor of village hall.
  • Miss Teen New Hyde Park Alexandra Rasch will be competing in the Miss Manhattan Teen 2014 competition, which is affiliated with the New York Council of Mayors.
  • The 2013 Katie’s Run 5K will be held on Sunday, June 23 at about 8:30 a.m. beginning at the New Hyde Park Funeral Home.
  • Registration for the summer recreation program will take place on Monday, June 24 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the village hall. Those registering must bring a 2x2 photo ID of the child and a tax bill. Registration for village residents is free, those outside the village must pay a $100 fee.
  • The New Hyde Park Road School sixth grade class has requested use of Memorial Park for their annual picnic.
  • Residents have until July 1 to pay their village tax bills without penalty. The village estimates that it has collected 25 percent of the tax bills to date.

The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board will be on Tuesday, July 16 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
