New Hyde Park Village Board Notebook: March 20

Other news from the March 20 village board meeting.

The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, March 20. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Memorial Park Recreation House

  • The recreational house at Memorial Park received a facelift thanks to Eagle scout, Justin Rezin.
  • Rezin, a 16 year old student at  and choose to fix up the house for his Eagle Scout Project.
  • Some of the changes include new paint on the walls and bathrooms as well as reorganized shelves.

Department of Public Works and Beautification

  • The village has taken delivery on the new superintendant vehicle. The new vehicle will take the place of an old vehicle that is no longer in service.
  • “All of our equipment purchases are now in place,” trustee Robert Lofaro said.
  • There may be some new trees lining the streets of New Hyde Park.
  • “In the newsletter we put a piece about residents requesting trees and we have over a dozen requests that have come in already,” Lofaro said. “We are delighted that residents have responded this way.”

2012 Road Improvement Project

  • At the previous village meeting, the board  that will be part of the upcoming road improvement project.
  • A map was also created to illustrate previous roadwork with various colors of the different road projects the village has undertaken since just prior to 1999.
  • The map will be published on the village website.

“Voice of the Village”

  • A competition will begin in August to find the “voice of the village,” trustee Donald Barbieri said.
  • The competition is for children up to age 18.
  • A link on the village’s website is currently being created where hopefuls can get information on the contest and print out an application as well as all other forms needed.

Jericho Turnpike Project

  • Last spring when the  for the  were announced, over 150 comments were made, forcing the Department of Transportation to reconsider some aspects.
  • The committee addressed those issues with the landscape architect and engineering group and they are hopeful that solutions will be submitted again by the end of this month.
  • “We’re hoping this will in fact lead us to the finish line where the big booklet can be put together and hopefully picked up here at village hall.” Barbieri said.

Zoning Board of Appeals

  • The zoning board of appeals met March 14 and approved two cases: 575 North 7th Street and 128 N. 10th Street.
  • The next meeting will be April 11.
  • Special use hearings will be held on April 2: a dance studio is requesting to move down the block to 15 Jericho Turnpike. An automobile storage repair shop is requested to locate to 1401 4th Ave. A request for a fitness center at 1115 2nd Ave. has been submitted.

License Renewals

  • The following companies have had their landscaper license renewed:  (Garden City Park), Emmanuel Landscaping (Jericho),  (Garden City Park), Rocco’s Evergreen Landscaping (New Hyde Park).

The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board will be on Tuesday, March 17 at 8 p.m. at the .
