The New Hyde Park Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, October 1. Here are some things you may have missed.

2014 Village Road Improvement Project

  • The village is planning for over $1.5 million worth of roadwork as part of the 2014 road reconstruction project.
  • The project will encompass one to 1.5 miles of road in New Hyde Park.
  • “We tried to look at roads that have drainage issues,” mayor Robert Lofaro said, adding that the project is projected to begin in early April.

Use Requests

  • The Greater New Hyde Park Republican Club requested to renew its application to use Marcus Christ Hall six times per year, pending availability. The first of its six usages was on Sept. 30, 2013. Due to the late notice, the club received a verbal approval from the board for that single use.

  • The New York State Dormitory Authority has completed its audit and will be processing the village’s reimbursement request of $100,000 on Sept. 30 for the remaining amount of money relating to the restoration of the William Gill Theater.
  • The building department issued 42 building permits during the month of September.
  • The village will be advertising for bids for a tree trimming service. In the past the village had used Louis Tree Trimming service, the Nassau County contractor, being able to take advantage of the county bid. However, the contractor was not available in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The new bid would have the stipulation that the winning company would face consequences if they were not available to provide service to the village in the aftermath of an emergency being declared.
  • A total of 25 trees are on order and scheduled for a winter planting in late October/ early November.
  • The village continues to work on design specifications for new recycling trucks. It is estimated that if the trucks were ordered they could be delivered by end of the year.
  • The contractor for the beautification work on Jericho Turnpike as part of the Operation: Mainstreet program will begin work on Oct. 8.

Other Board News

  • It was reported that evidence of an attempted break in was found at 116 South Sixth St. where a damaged to an A/C vent was evident but no access was gained.
  • The village will be launching a children’s theater arts workshop program beginning Oct. 17 on Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the William Guild Theater. Dan Wessler will help to run the program which may lead into a holiday show according to Barbieri. elementary through high school.
  • The New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will have its membership drive breakfast at the Hillside Diner at 160 Hillside Ave. on Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • The village has received a sponsorship of $2,000 from New Hyde Park Taxi for the back of its parking voucher book for residents using the commuter lots near the railroad tracks. The next printing of vouchers is estimated to be about 50,000.
  • The board members thanked the village employees, chamber of commerce, community members and all other local groups involved with the street fair.

The next meeting of the New Hyde Park Village Board will be on Tuesday, October 14 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
