On Saturday and Sunday, fishermen and women throughout the area may fish without a license.

North Hempstead Center Hits Millionth Call

The Town of North Hempstead celebrated its one millionth call earlier this week. The creation of the 311 Call Center in 2005 was aided by a $500,000 federal grant, according to a press release from the Town. Serving as a link between  residents and its services, the center helps many of the Town’s senior residents to stay connected to Project Independence.  Others call to find out about upcoming events, like the Parks Department’s Summer Concert Series.

Boardwalk Repairs Get Federal Backing

Recent repairs to the Jones Beach Boardwalk after damage caused by Hurricane Sandy are getting federal backing.

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Tuesday that the New York State Office of Parks Recreation & Historic Preservation will receive $2,469,057 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for repairs to the two-mile long boardwalk. This will cover 90 percent of the state's bills for the repairs, according to a Schumer spokeswoman. 

Adelphi Underrated, Report Says
Adelphi University is one of the most underrated colleges in America, according to a Business Insider report.
Of the 25 schools listed, Adelphi came in at number 16. 
Most students at the school major in some sort of health field (23 percent), while other focuses include business (13 percent) and social sciences (12 percent).

Medical Center on Life Support
The Long Beach Medical Center, closed since October after Hurricane Sandy caused $56 million in flood damages, may have to cease its acute care services after the New York State Department of Health proposed this measure due to a statewide surplus of hospital beds as admissions decline.

Urban Outfitters to Open at Whitman Mall

Urban Outfitters is coming the Walt Whitman Shops, another new store in the reshaping of the mall's lineup.

The new store is expected to open in August. The  7,892-square-foot store will be the first Urban Outfitters location in the area.
