North Hempstead Notebook: Pool Memberships, Health Fair, Food Drive

Here's a look at what's going on in the Town.

Pool Memberships

Swimmers take note: Pool memberships at the reconstructed swimming pool complexes in New Hyde Park and Port Washington are soaring, a Town of North Hempstead spokesman said. 

At the , the 30,000 square-foot, facility, which held its grand re-opening Oct. 9, 2010, the number of membership passes climbed from 1,394 for the period between January and August 2007 to 2,793 for the same period this year, according to the Town.

And at the 35,000 square foot , the number of memberships sold increased from 1,278 a year ago to 4,443 this year, according to the Town. The number of visits to Manhorhaven pool increased from 21,315 in the period of June through August 2010 to 27,410 visits for the same period in 2011, a Town spokesman said.

The Tully Park pool reconstruction features a figure eight slide and three separate zones, an interactive area with six water features, a zone with six lanes for lap swimming and a zero-depth entry zone for wading. Also available: a pool lift. On the pool level, the exercise room – now three times the size of the old one – has a wall of windows overlooking the pool. There are also new spin cycles and a variety of exercise equipment.

At the Manorhaven pool complex, there are competition and lap swim areas, general swim sections, zero-depth entry for children and beginners, as well as water slides and spray features. 

Health Fair

There was a Senior Health Education and Information Fair on Aug. 8 at FunDay Monday in the Town of North Hempstead. About 500 people attended.

This fair offered health tips regarding finances, emotions, et cetera. More than 70 organizations from area hospitals to advocacy groups.

“Providing accessibility to adequate healthcare services for our seniors, as well as the latest trends and information available through both government and the private sector, is precisely what makes this fair unique and significant,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman in a statement. “This event demonstrates just one more reason why CNN Money Magazine ranked the Town of North Hempstead one of the top 25 healthiest places to retire in the United States.”

Food Drive

State , R-Mineola, is encouraging food donations to the Harry Chapin food bank. There are donation boxes in many village halls, libraries and pools.

"They told us that unfortunately during the summer, that's their downtime,"  of the food bank. "They get lots of donations during the holiday time, but for some reason over the summer there's a dip."
