North Hempstead Notebook: Recycling, Waste and Drugs

Here is what is going on in the Town.

Recycled Art

Students can submit some of their work to the third annual Recycled Artwork Contest. The winners of this contest will have their work showcased from Dec. 8 through Jan. 9 in the Great Neck Arts Center's gallery, according to a press release.

This is part of the town's School Recycling Partnership Program. Last year, there were 1,300 participants and their work was exhibited in Albany with the help of Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.

“With prescription drug abuse on the rise, we urge all residents to go through their home medicine cabinets and take advantage of this opportunity to safely dispose of their unwanted and expired prescription drugs at our drop off locations,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said in a statement.

The Town's program started in the fall of 2009 and the Town is the first municipality in Nassau County to have a drug disposal event, according to a press release. The program is conducted with the Nassau County Police Department and since its inception, more than two tons of pharmaceuticals has been collected.

Waste Management Rating

North Hempstead’s Solid Waste Management Authority recently received a AA credit rating from Standard & Poors.

“Considering the challenging fiscal climate municipalities, including our own, are coping with, we are extremely proud of the fact that the high marks given to SWMA’s credit rating mirrors North Hempstead’s solid financial foundation,” Kaiman said in a statement.

In a statement, S&P said, “The stable outlook reflects the strength of the service agreement between the Authority and the Town and the expectation that North Hempstead will continue to maintain strong financial operations. We do not expect the rating to change within our two-year horizon as we believe the Town will continue to maintain strong reserves.”
