Kaiman Delivers State of the Town Speech

highlighted such accomplishments as expanding the town's and growing , in his 2012 annual state of the town speech on Tuesday.

The event was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Port Washington and Manhasset.

He also said that in 2011 the town was recognized for its outstanding and comprehensive “performance measurement” system by the International City/County Management Association.

Unemployment Remains Unchanged

Unemployment in North Hempstead in December remained unchanged at 5.8 percent, the same rate it was a month ago. In December 2010, it was up slightly at 5.9 percent. There were 6,400 North Hempstead residents listed as unemployed in both December and November, compared to 6,700 a year ago. But fewer North Hempstead residents filed for unemployment benefits in December than they did a year ago.

Intel Students Honored

The sixteen North Hempstead students who qualified as semifinalists in the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search were honored by the North Hempstead Town Board.

“One of the great attributes of our Town is that we have some of the most successful schools within our borders,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said.

The projects ranged from exploring the possible causes of Parkinson’s Disease, the impact of Twitter during the recent uprising in Egypt and the Occupy Wall Street movement to the body language that triggers trustworthiness the impetus for cell-phone use while driving.

Aquatic Center Fee Reduced for Holiday

The daily entry fees to North Hempstead Aquatic Activity Center (AAC) at Michael J. Tully Park will reduced by half for Presidents Day weekend.

The 50 percent holiday discount will be effective from Feb. 18 to Feb. 20.
