The will be one of a few places on Long Island where same-sex couples can get their marriage licenses on Sunday, the first day that they can do so. Justice F. Dana Winslow will also be available to consider couples individually for waivers to the 24-hour waiting period so they can get married immediately.
"It's important for us to take the lead in being part of this very monumental day," said. "There are a lot of couples who have been together for years and shouldn’t have to wait an extra day."
Gross explained that with Supervisor Jon Kaiman's support, she took the lead on opening Sunday; Gross was leaning toward being open when she attended the recently.
Having the Clerk's office open on Sunday will not cost the Town very much; perhaps an extra $200 or less, Gross noted. The people who are working that day will receive comp time for doing so, she said.
"North Hempstead has always taken the lead with what they think is right," Gross said. "We're very happy to be part of historic day."
