Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed a bill designating the New Hyde Park Road overpass as the “Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri, Jr. Memorial Bridge.”

In October 2012, Olivieri, a 15-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, was struck and killed by a motorist while investigating a traffic accident on the L.I.E. involving a drunk driver. He is survived by two children.

“Designating the New Hyde Park Road overpass in honor of Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri, Jr. is but a small token of appreciation to Police Officer Olivieri and his family for the ultimate sacrifice he made on behalf of our community,” said Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, a sponsor of the bill.

Earlier this year, Olivieri was one of 16 fallen police officers honored by the governor at the recent Police Officers’ Memorial Remembrance Ceremony in Albany.
